Thomas Brasch was born in Yorkshire on February 19th 1945. His parents were Jewish Communist emigres. After the War in 1947 his father moved the family to East Germany. He sent Thomas to a strict military academy. In 1964 Thomas enrolled in a media course at Leipzig University but was sent down for slandering leaders of the GDR. To earn money he worked as a labourer and waiter. He enrolled in the film school at Babelsberg. In 1968 he was arrested and sent to prison for distributing leaflets opposing the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. After prison he was sent to a metal factory as part of his rehabilitation. Bertolt Brech's widow - Helene Wiegel arranged for him to leave the factory and help with the Brecht archives. In 1988 he managed to leave East Germany for the West - though the East German secret police harassed him constantly. When after the fall of the Berlin Wall the secret police archives were opened it was found that they had a dossier running to 8,000 on him. Thomas Brasch died on November 4th 2001 in Berlin
