Doug Buckley's book-length memoir and personal essay Fragments from a Forgettory (Sid Harta) shows a British and Irish convict underclass creating an often-envied antipodean democracy. Buckley writes in an unmistakably Australian voice and with a heart for the underdog . `Enjoyed immensely. Revealing' -Peter Coleman, former Opposition Leader, NSW. `A highly personal, insightful ref lection on a life of public service in New South Wales' -Nick Greiner, former Premier. `A pure joy to read ... priceless. . .' -Wendy O'Hanlon, Acres Australia. `Engaging ... challenging ... refreshing and helpful' -Bishop Michael Challen. Buckley has published long and short fiction, his unpublished novel, One Black Bureaucrat being short-listed for the ABC Bicentennial Literary Award. His `spare, sleek, creative' novel, ///State Of Play// (Albatross) sold over 2000 copies: 'a joy...highly recommended to remind people of basic struggles of their hearts' while saying `interesting things about greed, power, guidance, the compassion of God'. Buckley is seventh generation Australian with a strong convict heritage. A versatile Australian, he has lectured in engineering at universities in Australia, Japan and Europe from an academic base at the University of New South Wales, as well as working in government policy, economics, construction, research and planning within the engineering field.
