Steve Horace Carter received the Living Legend award at the 2001 National Black Theatre Festival. He was Victory Gardens Theater's first playwright-in-residence beginning in 1981, and has also served as playwright-in-residence at George Mason University. Carter's Pecong (winner of the Joseph Jefferson award for New Work) premiered at Victory Gardens in the l989-1990 season and received subsequent productions at London's Tricycle Theatre, American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, and Newark Symphony Hall. His plays eden (winner of an Outer Critics Circle award, an audelco award, and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle award ) and Nevis Mountain Dew received Midwest premieres, and Dame Lorraine, House of Shadows, Shoot Me While I'm Happy, Spiele '36 or the Fourth Medal and Root Causes all premiered at Victory Gardens. Carter has recently finished a draft of his new play Paradise and is currently teaching writing workshops at the Restoration Center for Arts and Culture in Brooklyn. Recently, as a recipient of the Living Legend award form the National Black Theater Festival, he continues consulting and teaching eight young playwrights. His Nevis Mountain Dew is currently being produced at Town Street Theater in Los Angeles; two concert readings of Spiele '36 or the Fourth Medal will be produced this June by Michelle Swanson and Larry George at the National Time Trials for the Olympic Track and Field Team. eden continues to be produced all over the world.

Nevis Mountain Dew

Synopsis:
the place is a home in Queens (NY), where the family of Jared Philibert, who has long been confined in an iron lung, gathers to celebrate his fiftieth birthday. Present are his wife; his two sisters, who also live in the house and care for him; the younger sister's boyfriend (who has brought along a case of West Indian rum called "Nevis Mountain Dew"); and a strapping young co-worker of his wife's. as the rum flows so does the truth: the bitterness of the sisters, who have sacrificed so much to look after their brother; the still young and passionate wife, whose husband has so long been a helpless invalid; and the young co-worker, whose attraction to the wife is no longer a secret.
