Cast Offs Youth Theatre was formed in March 2002 by Claire Haddon and Lisa Cox. Having attended the Edinburgh Festival Fringe on and off since 1985, it had become apparent that youth Drama and musicals tend to be performed by public schools such as Westminster or off-shoots of National groups such as the National Youth Theatre, etc. We wanted to achieve quality theatre with a less elitist philosophy where the issues covered reflected the realities of young people's lives in the 21st Century. When we were younger school plays focussed on Shakespeare, and Shaw, etc and were adult plays performed by young people, rather than the plays about young people. Equally much of the youth repertoire performed widely today centres upon: Oliver, Grease, Barnum, etc. We wanted to do something different and we have! Over the last 7 years we have produced 5 plays, 2 musical and a choral project, supported and managed by Rotherham Young People's Services. Young people have also gained certificates and accreditations from Millennium Volunteers for their voluntary commitment and OCN credits for such things as Introduction to Singing and Movement and Self-confidence through Drama. Each year we work with around 20-30 young people aged 13 - 25 from across the borough. What is nice about the project is the fact that the group is not static but changes each year. The project has an inclusive, non - audition ethos and is open to all, regardless of ability or previous experience - this is a unique approach, particularly with regard to the Fringe which recommends that all shows be of appropriate quality and readiness. The Group is on Facebook
