Empire Burlesque

Synopsis:
empire Burlesque, a satirical Vaudeville romp hosted by Mark Twain, chronicles America's bumbling first foray into empire - the Spanish-American War. Media mogul William Randolph Hearst is the sole backer, so his Showgirl paramour can make her stage debut. the medium is the message, as Twain and Hearst struggle for control of the show, and their version of history. And of course, there's the red-hot vocal stylings of Emma Goldman, William McKinley's patriotic sleight-of-hand, Teddy Roosevelt's tap-dance up San Juan Hill, with a bevy of all-American showgirls.

Notes:
Written by Dan Castellaneta, Book & Lyrics with Deb Lacusta, Music by Laura Hall. empire Burlesque was selected as part of the Disney/ASCAP Musical Workshop hosted by Stephen Schwartz. Before his passing, historian and author Howard Zinn ("A People's History of the United States") called empire Burlesque "hilarious and powerful," and "certainly relevant to what is happening today."
