Mother India
Synopsis:
Set in a fertility clinic in Gujarat, India's 'rent-awomb' capital of the world for wealthy women of the West, the play starts when Aditi and Eva meet. One driven by financial necessity, the other driven by the desire to be a mother. Set on the fault lines of profound global forces, can it possibly remain that simple? Satinder wants this to be a play "about motherhood, bodies and blood ties between women and nations in a brave new 21st century world".

Twelve
Synopsis:
Twelve touching and sometimes humorous monologues inspired by true stories about friendship, first love, defiance, death and survival. Twelve is a creative response to the shocking statistic that on average twelve women are killed in the UK every year by family members in so-called 'honour based violence'. Twelve writers have created a unique theatre event to highlight this all-too-common issue and to give a voice to those who have tragically lost their lives. The stories are interwoven with modern dance, expressing the freedom of the women's spirit and the conflict between cultural tradition and modernity.
Notes:
Written by Sonali Bhattacharyya, Sharmila Chauhan, Satinder Chohan, Azma Dar, Tanika Gupta, Bettina Gracias, Sayan Kent, Yasmeen Khan, Anu Kumar, Amber Lone, Nessah Muthy and Yasmin Whittaker-Khan. Inspired by True Stories

Zameen
Synopsis:
In the cotton fields of Punjab, Baba, an ageing farmer tends to his crop and pins his hopes of prosperity on GM seeds and Western pesticides. His feckless son, Dhani, full of frustrated ambition, dreams of going to America. His more dutiful daughter, Chandni is torn between staying on the land she loves and facing poverty or following the man she adores to a more prosperous life abroad. . . the final reckoning on Baba's land draws out painful truths and forces the family to the brink of collapse in a fast changing world rapidly losing its values. This beautifully written and moving new play tells of the disastrous environmental damage and the devastating effect on real human lives triggered when the forces of nature, tradition and globalisation collide. This topical and timely work explores the human reality of a major global issue that will ultimately affect us all.
Notes:
Zameen was first developed and given a public reading through Kali Futures, our new writing development programme. We mounted a workshop production at Soho theatre in November 2006 where it received an enthusiastic response and sold out its short run. After further development, Kali presented an extract at Arts Council England's Decibel Showcase.
