American Hero Entertains, An
Synopsis:
Outside a neglected, sun-bleached diner in the Mojave Desert sits earl, cradling a shotgun in one hand and a beer in the other. From within can be heard the plaintive callings of his wife, Barbara. He does his best to ignore them. Before long, however, earl is faced with a phenomenon less easy to ignore: the arrival of a customer. Clearly not a great host at the best of times, earl is doubly displeased at the sight of this particular patron, who claims to be none other than George, a former colleague from earl's days at NaSa. The problem is, earl could've sworn he'd killed George years ago, when they were up there on the aquarius III mission. 'George' simply can't be who he says he is; but if he isn't, then who - or what - is he? Well, whatever the answer to that question, one thing soon becomes apparent: 'George' means to cause trouble for earl.

Death Of Nelson, The
Synopsis:
a tragicomedy about people and their politics, The Death of Nelson is also about friendship, betrayal, love, ageing, missed opportunities, disillusionment, growing up, and, in certain cases, NOT growing up. Set over 18 years between the high tide of Thatcherism and the dawn of the New Labour era, the play documents the often turbulent relationship between Richie, his godson Nelson, and Nelson's parents Jo and anton - student radicals who named their son for Nelson Mandela, but whose radicalism is eroded on the long journey to employment in the Blair government. Meanwhile, as Nelson's parents are losing their idealism, the once conservative Richie is acquiring - and trying to hold onto - some of his own.

Nothing Personal
Synopsis:
Nothing Personal is a tragicomical meditation on the perils of mixing business with pleasure. It starts on Sarah's first day as part of the ad sales team on the easthaven echo. Unbeknownst to her, she's been given the job because Russell, one of those charged with doing the recruiting, fancied her more than the other candidates. against all odds, however, Sarah turns out to be a natural: before long she's running the department and Russell's stacking shelves at the local supermarket. Russell's caseload is taken over by Hayley, the work experience girl, who turns out, like Sarah, to be a natural. Unlike Sarah, however, she's not content to stay in ad sales - and as she's sleeping with the boss, the world (at least the world of the easthaven echo) is her oyster. Unfortunately she's considerably less gifted as a journalist than as a telesales executive, and her rise to power brings the 'paper perilously close to folding (pun intended) - helped in no small measure by continued meddling from Russell.

Sustained Note Of Fury, A
Synopsis:
a Sustained Note of Fury is the tale of Otto Ronaldi Jr, a circus clown struggling to emerge from the shadow of his much more popular and well-loved clown father. Because Papa would never let him share the limelight, Otto Jr ran away from Stubberfields circus - but now, 19 years on, the old man is dead, and the son returns, expecting to inherit the clownic crown. With Otto on this journey, supporting him through the funeral and helping him to clear out the old boy's caravan, is his wife and manager adele. With younger, more lucrative clients coming onto her books, she's as keen as her high-maintenance husband to see him settled in his father's old job. Life, of course, is never that simple - but whatever happens, one thing's for sure: a turning-point is looming for Otto and adele.
Notes:
a filmed extract is viewable online At www.bobbycohen.co.uk. The play, described by its Author As A 'melanchomedy', utilises some of the traditions of the circus to tell its story, giving it, At least in part, A postmodern style rarely seen in straight Drama.
