Barbara Colio was born in the desert city of Mexicali, Baja California in 1969. She studied engineering in Baja California before studying theatre, and began working as an actress in 1988. She wrote her first play in 1996 and has written more than a dozen plays, of which eight have been produced including La boca del lobo, which was produced in the Festival Cervantino in 2004. In 2000 she was invited to take part in the Royal Court International Residency in London, and afterwards she became a resident writer in the The Writers Room in New York. In 2004, she became the first Mexican to win the Maria Teresa Leon International Prize for Theatre Writers in Spain for Pequenas certezas (Little Certainties). Little Certainties was produced in Mexico City in 2007.
