James Comtois is the co-founding co-artistic director of the New York-based theatre company Nosedive Productions, which was named a "Person of the Year" by nytheatre.com in 2009. He's written over 20 plays in the past 10 years, many of which have been staged by Nosedive. The New York Times recently compared him to Conor McPherson and Tracy Letts, which he thought was very nice of the newspaper. Published plays include The Adventures of Nervous-Boy (in Plays and Playwrights 2007 by the New York Theatre Experience), Suburban Peepshow, and Infectious Opportunity (both by Original Works Publishing). Other staged plays include Colorful World, Nona (based on the short story by Stephen King, as part of The Blood Brothers present. . .The Master of Horror), The Little One, Otty (as part of The Blood Brothers present. . .FREAKS FROM THE MORGUE) and Captain Moonbeam & Lynchpin. He lives in Brooklyn and has two cats. He thinks they're very cute.

Awaited Visit, The
Synopsis:
"the awaited Visit" is not a commentary on our society's haste in granting superlatives to media-friendly personalities ("the sharpest intellect the Pentagon has ever known - the most beautiful star in Hollywood -"). It is not an inquisition on the exploitation of genius. It is not a thesis on how the desire for intelligence has become a corrupted and self-serving exercise. It is not a study in how sex is used as a weapon. It is not a comment on the fraudulence of authority figures. It is not a parody of our culture's taste for junk which is masked as intellectual legitimacy. It is not an exploration of the roles teachers and students play. It is not about our herdlike mentality as we blindly follow self-proclaimed "experts." It is not an analysis of the arbitrary nature of intelligence. It is not a term paper on how heroes and role models invariably disappoint. and it is not an examination of how Those who Want abuse Those who Have. It's a play, stupid.

Colorful World
Synopsis:
In 1988, the world discovered a man who was indestructible, impervious to pain, and able to destroy a tank with his mind. In the early- to mid-nineties, a craze where vigilantes dressed up in flashy costumes and fought crime took the nation by storm. Now it's 2005. the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center are still standing. Hurricane Katrina has decimated New Orleans. the Iraq War is coming to a close. and several former costumed crimefighters realize their marks on the world are more akin to those of has-been rock stars. This is Colorful World, Nosedive Productions' latest full-length production that takes on the superhero genre. Far from a pulpy comic book-style romp, James Comtois and Pete Boisvert envision a world radically changed by the arrival of an invincible man, and not necessarily for the better

Mayonnaise Sandwiches
Synopsis:
a typically messed-up postmodern family going through the motions of faux-normalcy. In a collage of scenework, magic realism, musical interludes, dreamscapes, and self-conscious parody, nothing particularly shocking occurs. Yet in a style reminiscent of Thornton Wilder, Comtois gently makes the ordinary extraordinary in a play whose cumulative effect subtly supersedes each vignette's individual contributions to the narrative.
