I got my first taste of seeing my work in print when I was still in high school in Frankston, Texas, writing for the school paper. Then, during the summers, I wrote a column for my hometown newspaper. It wasn't until college, however, when I saw the movie version of Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple" that I decided to try my hand at writing plays. My first one-act, "The Boys In The Halls", was produced at Lon Morris Junior College in 1968 and has since vanished in some forgotten trash can. After moving to Houston in 1970, I soon found other writing assignments at AstroWorld, educational radio, night clubs and local television. My first play to be published was "Rest in Peace", released in 1976 by Dramatic Publishing in Woodstock, Il. Still, writing was only a sideline along with several other odd jobs, which included playing piano in pizza parlors, acting in local commercials, industrial films and on stage, building scenery and selling pianos and organs. However, more plays got published and along the way, my wife, Rose Ann, taught me the joys of using a computer. This coupled with my conviction to drop everything else and write full time, proved to be a turning point in my life.As of this writing, I have over 150 plays published by nine publishers. Several of these have been translated into Dutch and German. It's like that old saying, "The harder I work, the luckier I get". I firmly believe that everyone has a story to tell, a dream to pursue. And, believe me, if I can do it, anybody can.

If the Good Lord's Willing And the Creek Don't Rise

Synopsis:
This zany comedy, in the spirit of Kaufman and Hart, centers on Doc, an eccentric old man whose house caters to all sorts of characters. Now a retired judge, he spends his days "enjoying life." When he's not flying around the countryside in his balloon or fishing in a nearby dry riverbed, he works on his books of nonsense. This prompts his daughter, Charlotte, to decide he's lost his marbles. So, conspiring with a sly lawyer, she plans to not only become his guardian but also sell his house and property. Throw in a psychologist on her first case, love sick teenagers, an irate school bus driver and an occasional artist or two and it's a madhouse! Will Doc be committed or not? Of course he offers his own defense. "You ought to try tilting at a windmill every so often," he philosophizes. "It's great exercise and a nice breeze goes with it." When he shows up at his sanity hearing dressed as a magician, his daughter and her lawyer think they have it all sewed up. However, Doc has a few surprise rabbits to pull out of the hat. This tour de force is appropriate for schools, churches, dinner theaters and all audiences. Can Doc pull it off? as Leo says, "there is method to his madness." and Doc shows one and all what a little nonsense can do "If the Good Lord's Willing and the Creek Don't Rise."

Let's Hang Him And Read the Will

Synopsis:
all is not well in the little burg of Beautyrest Springs. It's most prominent (and hated) citizen, F. Mycroft Tanner, did himself in. at least, that's what Sheriff Harold Tyred reports in between his visits with Martha, the maid, who was also seeing Percy, the gardener, who is sweet on Freida, the reporter, who really wants the inside scoop on Mycroft's death (and his rather plush will). It is up to fat cat attorney, Lamar Lee Rascal, to unravel all this and find the missing will, Mycroft's diamond ring, and the misplaced family scrapbook. He is distracted, however, by running into Mycroft's daffy sister, Jemmy Jean, who he left at the altar some twenty-five years ago. If you think it's all too confusing, wait until two people show up claiming to be the same long-lost daughter, the murdered maid's older sister puts in an appearance and a tour guide starts bringing groups through the scene of the crime. This riotous spoof is full of soap opera-isms and will keep you guessing until the last suspect you suspected is no longer a suspect. Interior set.

Live Onstage!

Live Onstage!
Professor Featherflowers comes on stage and begins her lecture, How to Write a Play. You're snoring already, right? That's exactly what the Stage Manager is worried about when he peeks through the curtain and tells the Professor to jazz it up, that she needs to open with a joke. the professor then tells him she did. You see, she says, You don't really exist I made you up. YOU are my opening joke! Needless to say, he doesn't believe her and calls for his sound person, Shirley, to come out. the Professor then tells them both that they aren't real and simply characters she invented for to demonstrate her speech. From there on out it's all a question of what is real and what isn't as they are then joined by the Director, a Southern Belle, a Shakespearean Lord and a tap-dancing chicken. also, a silent woman keeps bringing out props as the Professor makes notes in her speech. Is the Professor making all this up? If so, has she lost control of her characters? Why won't the woman speak? What is real and what isn't? This farcical existential spoof is full of deeper meanings. at least, that's what the Director believes. Maybe we all represent the planets? he questions. Maybe we're the Great Lakes! yells Shirley, and you're erie!

Mobile Home Sweet Home

Synopsis:
Howd you like to be on television? This question, posed by future daughter-in-law Anne, takes Loff DuVall by surprise. After all, he and May June had been running the Hampton Court trailer park for more years than either would care to admit. The last thing hed want now is to be in some reality TV show. In fact, he was hoping he and May June could get away for a while, take a long vacation from the place. He wouldnt have to listen to Goose Halfords long stories, such as how he grandpa has a metal plate in his head. The kids used to catch him asleep and put frigerator magnets on his forehead, he confides in Loff. Or having to help Lydia Spagways grandkid who just got her hand caught in a toilet. Add to this Rhonda DeFalcos gossip, Vonell Raffrerty looking for buried treasure with her metal detector and Etta Frobishers threat to close down his business, hes really at the end of his rope. But Annes idea, coupled with the fact shes practically engaged to son, Larry, shows Loff a way out. Except that, for the show to succeed, Loff cant leave! Throw in a conniving producer, a retired lieutenant colonel and everyone showing up looking like run-over hillbillies and Loff or May June just dont know whats to become of them, their tenants or the trailer park. This two-act comedy is full of oddball characters and will have your audience laughing and falling in love with all those at Hampton Court Trailer Park.

Everyone, that is, but those around Lost and Found.
