Genre: | Adaptation | |||||
Parts: | Male | - | Female | - | ||
Parts other: | large cast
Notes: | from novel by George Eliot
Synopsis: | Daniel Deronda, first published in 1876, was the last novel completed by George Eliot. Her sympathetic rendering of the central Jewish characters was controversial and perplexed the Victorian reading public who were used to novels such as Middlemarch and Silas Marner with their perceptive analysis of England's rural communities. Unlike the portrayal of Jews in other novels such as Dickens' Oliver Twist and Trollope's The Way We Live Now, Daniel Deronda was a brave attempt to depict a positive view of Jewish culture forcing readers from their reassuringly English assumptions.
