Daniel Deronda

Synopsis:
Daniel Deronda, first published in 1876, was the last novel completed by George eliot. Her sympathetic rendering of the central Jewish characters was controversial and perplexed the Victorian reading public who were used to novels such as Middlemarch and Silas Marner with their perceptive analysis of england's rural communities. Unlike the portrayal of Jews in other novels such as Dickens' Oliver Twist and Trollope's the Way We Live Now, Daniel Deronda was a brave attempt to depict a positive view of Jewish culture forcing readers from their reassuringly english assumptions.

Education Of A Lap Dancer, The

Synopsis:
If you re an attractive young girl from Romania, which will get you further . . . a GCSE or a G-string? John Cooper's latest play cuts through the political spin and looks at the increasingly complex cultural mix that is London today. Chris, a stressed- out teacher spends his evenings in a Lap Dance club where he meets the beautiful Ylenia, a Romania exotic dancer providing special services for those who can afford it. His wife Marie, an exhausted NHS doctor, finds herself charmed by Sorin, an enigmatic East-European trying to make a fast euro. When Chris daughter, Sophie, college girl and rock-chick wannabe, brings home black musician Billy, the cultural melting-pot begins to overheat. Fast-moving, street-wise and humorous, The Education of a Lap-dancer examines values and morals in a London undergoing rapid cultural change, where sex, as ever, is powerful and irresistible driving force.
