Melody Cooper's most recent play, Sweet Mercy, which deals with the genocide in Rwanda, was developed by New York Stage and Film in their 2005 summer Powerhouse series. Melody is the 2003 recipient of the Jane Chambers award for Playwriting for Day of Reckoning, a full-length play about the forgotten 19th century black activist Lucy Parsons, which also won the MultiStages New Works Competition in NY. the play was part of the New Theatre reading series in Miami last summer and will be produced there in their 2005/2006 season. Her one-act, Reading Zimbabwe, was produced in NYC three times in 2003 (including by epic Rep at DR2 with premieres by Lee Blessing and Romulus Linney). Ms. Cooper's one-act, Down Here, about 9/11 volunteers at Ground Zero, was produced in two highly successful runs in 2002. Melody recently completed a full-length biographical play about Marian Anderson for a Tony award-winning actress, and has received a commission to write a new work for epic Rep in 2006. Melody is a member of epic Rep.
