Chris Cragin spent her childhood in the Phillippines, Hong Kong and China before returning to Oklahoma where she spent her teenage and college years. While earning her MFa in Stage Directing from Baylor University, she found her true artistic passion, playwriting. Since, she has written seven full length plays including: The River Nun (Public Theater EWG Spotlight reading), War in a Manger (commissioned by art Within Theatre in Atlanta), Emily (Firebone Theatre, NYC in 2009, acacia Theatre, Milwaukee 2008, and workshopped at Pacific Theatre Vancouver, 2007), Deadheading Roses (Firebone Theatre, acacia Theatre, and published by Original Works Publishing), Debutantes anonymous (workshopped at The Lamb's Theatre), Love and Money, and Lady of the Dunes. She is currently writing the book to a musical, Son of a Khrusty (NDNW Drama League Fellowship). Chris also has six one act plays: Milking Success (actor's Theatre of Louisville Semi-Finalist and MWTC finalist), Peanut Butter or Soy (Baylor University), Pankhurst (Baylor University), Nathaniel, Dig (The Public EWG retreat), and Port authority (The Public EWG retreat). She and her husband, Steven Day, provide the artistic and managerial direction for their company, Firebone Theatre (www.firebonetheatre.com).

Deadheading Roses

Chris Cragin
This play is about a rose gardener named JOHNNY who has been tragically discarded by the only man she ever loved. as she searches for healing and renewal, it is her love of nature which she rediscovers in the beauty of the desert, in her beloved animals, and finally through the earth's blessing of rain that gives her the strength to allow the inescapable and painful changes in her life to take their course. The set should be very minimal, the more that can be communicated through lights and sound the better. The location on stage shifts between a desert in arizona, where JOHNNY and WILL lived for the first part of their marriage, a rose garden and home in Nashville, Tennessee, where they have lived since, and a small town in arkansas, where JOHNNY was raised and where her mother still lives. Time is the present.

Emily

Synopsis:
By the time she was 30, Emily Dickinson had so isolated herself from the world that she never left the house and rarely accepted visitors. Many have hypothesized why, suggesting madness, scorned love, or secret homosexuality. Emily looks at the events and relationships in Dickinson's life, and presents these as possible pieces to the puzzle. It offers Emily's poetic voice as a glimpse of her true self: her passionate spirituality, vigorous intellect, courageous sense of humor, and wounded heart.
