Although I have spent most of my life in the south (I was born in Georgia, lived in Maryland, Virginia, Florida, New Mexico, and now North Carolina), I have lived all over: Seattle, NYC, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Education: BFA in acting from Florida State University ('85); MA in Playwriting from Miami University of Ohio ('96); PhD in Theatre History and Criticism from the University of Washington ('08). My play The Road Where It Curves Away, about a snake-handling preacher and his family in Southwest Virginia, has been performed in Ohio and Virginia, winning the Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights ('04), Barter Theatre, Abingdon, VA. My plays for young people-Holmes: The Art of Deduction, and Beans Talk, an eco-friendly revision of the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk-have been performed in Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina. My one-act, Jack of Dover (KC/ACTF award, best play) was performed at the Kennedy Center and at the Filling Station in Albuquerque, NM. My most recent play, Bumbershoot, had its premiere at the New York International Fringe Festival this summer. Jule, Romie (songs of innocence) is due to have its first Staged Reading in Boone, NC this fall. I wrote and directed my screenplay, This Is Not the South, which has won numerous awards including First Place Tennessee Film (Secret City Film Festival), and been presented at regional conferences. I am currently at work on another screenplay, Strayaway Child, based on the old "Twa Sisters" folk ballad. I teach playwriting and theatre history at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. My wife, Karen Sabo, and I are in the midst of founding In/Visible Theatre, a professional theatre company based here in Boone.
Research: Member of the Dramatists Guild of America (as at 2015)

Holmes: The Art of Deduction
Synopsis:
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson become embrangled in international affairs when a mysterious masked stranger arrives at 221 Baker Street requiring the services of the world's greatest detective. What ensues is an exciting, hilarious adventure in deduction, with street fights, disguises, and the introduction of perhaps the most important woman in Holmes' life, the actress Irene adler. While Holmes pieces together clues for his Bohemian stranger, he vividly recalls another of his most intriguing cases, this one involving a bizarre little man with an affinity for encyclopedias, and lots and lots of red hair. This adaptation of two of Conan Doyle's best Holmes mysteries-"Scandal in Bohemia" and "the Red-Headed League"-has been given a contemporary makeover, with numerous roles for both males and females.
