Dan Dawes is a nascent playwright, who draws on the more absurd and uncanny aspects of modern life to create drama that is strikingly contemporary. His work often conveys important societal messages through storytelling, symbolism, dark humour and magical realism. The theatrical format is twisted with creative staging and original contexts. Dan's first play, Steel Tumbleweed, was produced by Uncanny Arts (which later became Idle Discourse) at The Courtyard Theatre, London. Reviewers called it "a startling original piece of new writing and a thumping debut" [Londontheatre], and "a show to open one's eyes" [The Reviews Hub]. Dan grew up in Gosport, Hampshire, before reading Education, English, and Drama at the University of Cambridge. He subsequently relocated to London and trained at the Institute of Education, working as a teacher for three years before moving into the theatre. As well as writing, Dan works as an actor and director, and is a passionate supporter of Portsmouth Football Club. His work can be explored at dandawes.co.uk, on Twitter at @DanDawesActor, and on Instagram at @dawes.dan.

        Signalman, The         Steel Tumbleweed

Signalman, The

Synopsis:
The London Underground. The dead of night. A young man is stranded far from home and is taken in, reluctantly, by a night watchman. But the night watchman - who we can call the signalman - is being watched himself. Things quickly turn dark when the signalman recounts horrific events from previous nights spent in his subterranean surroundings. All is not as it seems in this uncanny, twisted and startlingly original re-telling of Charles Dickens' classic ghost story.

Notes:
A modern day re-telling of the short story by Charles Dickens.

Steel Tumbleweed

Synopsis:
As the winds of desolation whistle through the empty streets, will four teenagers join the lost souls that inhabit their crumbling community? Is it a conspiracy, a coincidence, or simply a catastrophe that so many young people have gone from just one small town? Based on real events and genuine tragedies, Steel Tumbleweed highlights some of the struggles young people face in the unforgiving society that is modern Britain. This dark, stirring play touches on the very personal heartbreaks that reflect a broken community, exploring the surreal dichotomy between the incorporeal voices of online life and reality, as well as the eeriness of urban emptiness.

Notes:
Preview first produced at The Questors Theatre, London in March 2016 before transferring to The Courtyard. It's an ideal and brave choice of play for A-Level or college students, with its focus on young people's issues. Some excellent monologues for use in auditions too. A radio version of the play is available on request.
