After Electra

After Electra
I blame the books they learned to read with. Daddy at the office. Mummy looking out of the window while she's washing up. I should have burnt them. It's Virgie's 81st birthday and she is bucking convention with a very surprising trick up her sleeve. But always a more committed artist than mother, Virgie has not reckoned on her family and friends' determination to thwart her distinctly unusual birthday plans. Will her loved ones consent to her last wish, or could the secrets of their past stand in the way? April De Angelis' After Electra is a deeply moving and blisteringly witty black comedy that re-imagines the meaning of family and explores how the choices we make can change our lives forever.

Portugal

Synopsis:
International writers join up with their British counterparts to bring their experiences to the Royal Court. What is life really like for those living in todays austerity. Daily dispatches from Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain will invade the Jerwood theatre Upstairs. "With unemployment reaching almost 30% in Greece, soup kitchens springing up and immigrants being physically assaulted by Neo-Nazis on a regular basis it seems like the right time to put the lives of those affected by the eurozone crisis centre-stage at the Royal Court. Collaborating with writers from the countries on the frontline of austerity and using a variety of theatrical forms we will bring the PIIGS into the heart of London for a week of tragedy, comedy and rage" - Alexi Kaye Campbell, Playwright

Positive Hour, The

Positive Hour, The
Miranda is a social worker, with no shortage of problems herself. Her best friend, Emma, is a failed artist in the throes of a mid-life crisis; her lover, Roger, is a frustrated academic, desperately trying to finish his book on Hegel. Personal problems are exacerbated by work and especially, Miranda's relationship with Paula, an unemployed single mother from Lewisham, forced into prostitution to survive. Hilariously funny and quietly disturbing, the Positive Hour brings issues of gender and sexuality into a thoroughly new perspective.

Village, The

Village, The
Village life for Jyoti is simple: the people work hard, sing and live off the earth. She would rather devour a delicious meal than think about a suitable partner. But when the Inspector and his men arrive in town, things begin to sour. The Inspector's reign of terror sees him commit unspeakable acts against the village with young Jyoti in his sights, pushing everyone to breaking point.
