Novelist and dramatist R. F. Delderfield was born in London in 1912. His first job was as a junior reporter on the Exmouth Chronicle, where he worked his way up to the position of editor. He wrote a number of plays and some works of non-fiction, but is best known for his historical sagas, including A Horseman Riding By and To Serve Them All My Days. Many of his works have been adapted for television. He died in 1972.

Roger a clergyman has been appointed rector to a village in a rural area. He moves into the rectory with his wife Cathy. Orchard Walls

Synopsis:
the new principal at the Collegiate School for Girls has a more relaxed attitude to things than her predecessor and her deputy. One of the things that has been allowed is some social mixing with the nearby boys grammar school. the deputy finds a love letter written by one of the girls, Shirley to one of the boys Mike. Mike's Father is a garage owner. When Shirley's mother is told she immediately makes arrangements for Shirley to be sent to an aunt in Canada. the youngsters run away but are brought back by Mike's father.
