Robert Desnos poet, critic and surrealist, was born on July 4th 1900, his father was a poultry dealer. He went to a commercial college and began work as a clerk and then as a columnist for "Paris Soir". His first poems appeared in 1917 in "les Tribune des Jeunes". He met the poet Benjamin Peret who introduced him to the Paris Dada Set. Desnos fell in love with singer YvonneGeorge - but he was jealous of her obsessive fans. By 1932 he was working in radio and numbered Picasso, Artaud and Hemmingway amongst his friends. He became more and more involved in politics. During the Second World War he was a member of the French Resistance and helped making false identity papers. The Gestapo arrested him on February 22nd 1944. He was sent to Auschwitz, then moved to Buchenwald and finally to Terezin in Czechoslovakia, where he died of typhoid just weeks after the camp was liberated
