Absent Without Leave
Synopsis:
Absent Without Leave begins in 1995. Two elderly men meet in Queensland and share memories of their time as soldiers in New Guinea. One of their best friends has recently passed on. From there the play revisits the dangerous experience they all underwent in the heat of battle. Forced to be still and silent for a long period of time the men became totally reliant on each other where even the slightest noise or action would bring about their demise. The men reminisce about the lives they have left behind in Australia, their aspirations for the future and significant moments in their young lives, which serve to fuel their courage and their fear during their long entrapment. The play also looks at how these extreme circumstances affect the mens lives when they return home and how they cope with their wives, children, working lives and post war society.

It is revealed that the Vietnamese soldier is regularly forced to serve for both the North and the South Vietnamese armies before returning to his village. The two men piece together a symbiotic relationship through fractured French, simple English and Vietnamese phrases. Their fate is sealed just after they finally arrive at the seeming safety of the Vietnamese mans village.

Desire
Synopsis:
An adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams into physical theatre. Performed by Artisan Theatre in 1980-1981 in Melbourne. Some images from this production still live vibrantly in my imagination. The set was a tarantula made out of venetian blinds. When Blanches young husband held a gun to his forehead the lights went out and his face was projected on the blinds, which fractured as a shot was heard. Many, many stories remain unfortunately the same cant be said for a script.

Don Quick
Synopsis:
Don Quick is a contemporary dramatic retelling of elements of the classic novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It is set in Melbourne, Australia in the present day. The play tells two stories. In the first Michael Cervantes, an Australian playwright, is imprisoned for sedition, along with his manager Charlie Mustafa. While awaiting trial Michael tells the story of Don Quick to his dangerous seeming cell mates. Don Quick is an old man who lives in suburban Melbourne and reads great romantic novels. Escaping from the confines of his narrowing life he takes his imaginary friend, Charlie Spinoza on the road in his faithful Datsun 120Y called Rosey. During their adventures Don battles a giant neon crayfish in a small coastal town, breaks down the gates of a detention centre and battles a group of hoons at a railway station on the Black Stump Line. Most importantly, Don meets and falls in love with an escapee from the detention centre, Dulcie, a woman who doesn't speak. Don dedicates his quest for glory to the beauty of his 'Dulcinea.' When he is apprehended by the law Don is returned home to Doncaster where his niece and her husband are burning his books and planning his departure for La Mancha, a nursing home. Don does not fit in well at La Mancha and gets in trouble for attempting to stage a play with his fellow patients. The Board of La Mancha struggle to make Don conform to the rules of the institution. Before they succeed however, Don escapes for one last assault on conventional life - he launches a farcical attack on a shopping centre. Facing his last days in La Mancha Don renounces his imaginary friend and his own beliefs before dying in pain. At the end of this stories the prisoners have become attached to Don and some of his ideas and wish Michael well as he sets off for court to argue against the forces of conformity and repression.

Judy and Punch
Synopsis:
As the title suggests, this play turns the age old puppet plays on their head and puts Judy first. This is a quartet of short plays dealing with issues related to women. The first play, Many Rivers to Cross, is based on the true story of a woman fleeing her violent husband. Spring Cleaning is also based on a true story about a man learning to share domestic responsibilities and the care of their baby after a couple are involved in a serious car crash. Siren Summer looks at the struggles of a young girl who is abused by her father and makes an unexpected friendship with an eccentric beachcomber. Finally Ron and Julie upends Romeo and Juliet by setting the action in a depressed suburb where the children of two families are at war with each other while the single parents of each family fall in love. Judy and Punch is suitable for performances by Theatre in Education and Youth Theatre companies and is suitable for performance and study by secondary school students.

Men, The
Synopsis:
Four men meet in a bar. They have not met in years. One of them has invited the other three. As they spend a night together they reminisce on their lives experiences and the forces that have helped to create the men they have become. The men have experienced the loss of their jobs, marital separation and familial isolation. The events of the night lead to a shocking conclusion.
Notes:
The Men was written in response to a headline in a Canberra newspaper where a new CEO boasted that he would Get rid of all the 50 year olds. My response was Why would he do this? What happens to the collective knowledge and experience these men bring to the workforce. Most specifically what happens to the men? Over several seasons by various companies, the play has been accompanied by forums with the audience as mans issues rise to the surface.

Sanctuary
Synopsis:
Thousands of children grew up in the care system in Victoria and Australia throughout the 1900s. They are called the "Forgotten Australians". Sanctuary by playwright Chris Dickins is based on the stories of some of those people. Sanctuary tells the stories of the babies' homes and the industrial laundries where young pregnant women worked as they were hidden away from society. It tells of the young women who were forced to give up their babies and return to their lives and the innocent children growing up in often harsh and cruel environments where knowledge of where they came from or who they were was cruelly hidden from them. Sanctuary shows equally the neglect and the miraculous survival of the children and young women who called institutions home. Sanctuary shows us the historical care system and social and political ideologies of the time that underpinned them in all their harsh reality. The stories of abuse, cruelty, humour, care, kinship and deep and life long connections are dotted throughout this dramatic portrayal about the "Forgotten Australians." Despite the realities there is humour, joy and a wondrous spirit of survival.

Synopsis:
Soliloquy is a collection of eight monologues and a final scene where the 8 characters from the monologues meet at a funeral. They are all related and recall earlier times, when they were close to one another. The play has been performed in a perambulatory style with the audience moving to various locations appropriate to the monologues. Several monologues have been used as solo pieces by young performers in NSW as VCE pieces and others have been used for study at various performing arts training institutions.
Notes:

Solitaire
Synopsis:
Solitaire is a collection of 12 monologues for a single female performer, drawn from several full-length plays and a new short play written especially for this project, The Daughter of Veronica Leigh. The monologues range from a selection from Torch based on the life of Judy Garland through to an old bag-lady named Swannie, who sells the Football Record outside AFL games; to a never performed 10 minute solo based on a migrant Italian lady who loves dancing and Dean Martin Arriverdici Roma. There is a much-performed solo from a show called Soliloquoy called The Bride in the Belltower. The new work tells the story of a young girl whose mother is a famous stage actress and who spends her time imitating her mother in the great females roles of the theatre. Solitaire will provide a substantial challenge to a performer and offer them an opportunity to display all facets of their theatrical range.

Waratah
Synopsis:
Waratah is a musical theatre piece set in Waratah Bay, Victoria during the mid 1960s. Interspersing stories from two families, Waratah looks at love and how the experience of love is as potent for a thirteen year old as it is for people who are much older. There are also stories of infatuation, youthful rebellion, marital problems and forbidden attraction. The play features 18 songs performed by Australian rock and pop groups of the time. The rights to these songs must be sought from APRA for each season and are remarkably affordable. Waratah is suitable as a professional theatre production and for performances as a school musical.
