Born in 1963, Tom Diriwachter is a lifelong resident of Staten Island. Much of his writing is set in the borough, and it influences his work thematically, as his demimonde characters live in the shadow of Manhattan, commuting by ferry, not really belonging to either world. He is a graduate of Rutgers University, with a Masters in Cinema Studies from The College of Staten Island, CUNY. Though his plays tend more toward the traditional, his background is film, having begun writing for the stage only after repeatedly being told that his screenplays were too reliant on dialogue, finally discovering his passion. He's had five full-length plays produced in Manhattan, notably at Theater for the New City, and The American Theatre of Actors, and countless one-acts, at many of the city's off-off Broadway theaters, including The Drafts at Horse Trade, Love Creek, Pulse Ensemble, Theater Studio, Inc., the Riant Theatre's Strawberry Festival, and the Turnip Theatre Company's 15 Minute Play Festival. He's also worked with Penguin Rep Theatre, Personal Space Theatrics, and West Coast Ensemble. For the past four years, he has been a featured playwright in the LES Festival of the Arts. In addition to being a playwright, he is a screenwriter, and has published non-fiction in The New York Times, Backstage, and is a regular contributor to the literary website Mr. Beller's Neighborhood.

Great Kills
Synopsis:
Great Kills, written in a style reminiscent of such plays as David Mamet's American Buffalo, and Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night, is a darkly comic, emotionally gripping tale of a get-rich-quick scheme that goes awry. With the changing landscape of mental health, Meadowbrook, the institution where Mr. G has worked in maintenance for over thirty years, is shutting down. When Mr. G mentions to his son, Tim, who's living home after having lost his position as an adjunct professor of literature, how the institution's furniture -- "the kind of stuff you find in a doctor's office" -- is lying abandoned in a field, he dreams of making a fortune from selling the salvage. To finance the plan, he involves his estranged childhood friend, restaurateur, Robert. Over the course of a drunken evening of scheming, the plan becomes less real, as the men's desperate realities become more apparent, and a devastating family secret is revealed.

Pests
Synopsis:

Notes:
The Drafts Fest for 2010 is the collaborative effort of seven playwrights, seven directors, and ten multifaceted actors. Playwrights receive randomly compiled cast lists and create stories tailored to The Drafts and their invited Guests based on this years theme, Pre-Existing Condition. All of the playwrights who participated in the Pre-Existing Condition Draft's Fest were given the theme and two or three cast members before they started to write. They had one month to complete their short piece which was limited to ten minutes. Many of the playwrights met with their director and actors during the writing process in order to get to know the actors better. All of the actors "auditioned" for the playwrights, with one comedic and one dramatic monologue as well as a special skill, fact, or story they wanted to share about themselves. In this way, the playwrights grew to have some understanding of the actors' 'types' prior to writing. The theme taken from our health care vocabulary inspired a variety of writing, from pests and childhood emotional scars, to futuristic realities and poverty. Overall, we generated some exciting new work, some of which have been developed into full length plays.
