Simon was born in Lanark, Scotland in 1959. educated at Garrion Academy, Wishaw and Aberdeen University. He became a professional actor in 1983 working mainly in new plays at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and also in television and film. His credits as a writer include the stage plays A Tenant for Edgar Mortez, In Descent and Prickly Heat; television Dramas Deacon Broadie, the ebb-Tide, the Last Frontier, Low Winter Sun and Methuselah; feature films the Life of Stuff, My Life So Far, Beautiful Creatures, Sleep Without Dreams and Thylacine. He is married to the photographer Carol Gordon and they live in edinburgh
