Born in Portsmouth in 1955, Mr. Dear's career was that of a teacher of film and photography before he became a full-time playwright in 1981. In 1985 he was serving as resident playwright at the University of essex and is also working on a new play commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Synopsis:
In a Chester pub, a ragtag group of singers is the unlikely first company to perform Handels Messiah to a crowd of unappreciative drinkers. So begins the journey of the worlds most popular choral work  a journey full of seemingly insurmountable challenges facing the composer at every turn. Along the way he encounters the actress Susannah Cibber, the tricky librettist Charles Jennens and the mysterious Crazy Crow in his determined efforts to stage the concert that will change the way the world listens to music forever.

early one morning in August 1974, when the World Trade Centre had just opened, a young Frenchman astonished the world by walking a high wire between the summits of its two towers - 1,350 feet above the Manhattan streets. Philippe Petit's account of his clandestine coup has become an international best-seller. Now poet and novelist Nick Drake has adapted To Reach the Clouds for the stage. In a dentist's waiting room, 18-year-old wire walker Philippe Petit chances on a magazine article about a new building planned for New York: the World Trade Centre will be more than 100 metres higher than France's eiffel Tower. Over the next six and a half years, as the towers rise up into the sky, Petit and a group of conspirators tackle a host of seemingly intractable difficulties. even if they can stage a break-in and smuggle one ton of heavy equipment up 110 storeys, will they have time to execute Petit's plan and rig the wire between the towers?
