Ren Draya is from New York City and received her doctorate in dramatic literature from the University of Colorado (Boulder), where she was assistant director for "Cymbeline." She currently lives in central Illinois where she is chair of the English & Communications Department at Blackburn College. Her one-act play, "The Mothers," ran for three years at the 13th Street Repertory Theater in NYC (1981-1984), was staged in London at the Tufnel Theater (fringe, 1985), and at several Midwest colleges in the 1990's. She was awarded a New York State Creative Arts Fellowship for "The Mothers" and went on to write several other plays. "Queenie and Bea" received stage readings in NYC, Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. and was an award winner in the Margo Jones competition. Ren has a special interest in Shakespeare and has served as dramaturg for a number of college productions.

Queenie And Bea
Synopsis:
This concerns two old women, one white and one black, who move from mutual hostility and fear to friendship. It addresses the issues of old age, independence vs. companionship, racial and religious prejudice. Despite the heavy themes, there is considerable humor and a positive resolution.
