Back Swing
Synopsis:
It's too hot to play handball. It's too hot not to. "Backswing" is the story of Rookie, a young lion testing the limits of manhood, not to mention his game, and what happens when his older brother, Brian, returns from prison. Rookie would choose to be nothing short of the next great handball champion of a local New York City park, while Brian seeks only to be back in his brother's life. their mother, Rose, must hold tightly to her dignity and history, though often both come into conflict with Rookie's dreams. When the temperature of life brings Rookie's progress to a boil, he reaches out to an aging local legend, angel, for guidance and a doubles partner. Caught between two worlds where adults can be cruel, if not dangerous, Rookie finds little success and is forced to take action into his own hands. Cricket, Wallman, and Fireman, the local players, leave no room to breathe for Rookie, even as the walls of his existence fall inward from every angle. "Backswing" places handball as a major stop on the map for a dynamic and dysfunctional family and their road to making things right again.
