Especially The Latter Part - The Life Of Kenneth Halliwell
Synopsis:
What made Kenneth Halliwell the man he was? and what drove him to murder? Richard Ely tries to answer those questions in his one-man show Especially the Latter Part - the Life of Kenneth Halliwell at Lichfield Garrick Studio on Saturday (September 19th). In 1967 Halliwell murdered his lover, Leicester-born playwright Joe Orton, in a frenzied hammer attack. He then died from an overdose of sleeping pills. It was the culmination of a 16-year relationship that had led to Orton's transformation from a provincial nobody into one of the most feted writers of his era. But Halliwell, once the dominant personality in Orton's life, became a marginalised figure, overlooked and despised by Orton's new celebrity friends. Was Halliwell's motivation jealousy, as many have assumed? Or was he driven to his final desperate act by more complex forces? Drawing on original materials including Halliwell's own writings and correspondence, Especially the Latter Part is a "powerful and involving exploration of a man against whom life had a grudge, but who nevertheless inspired one of the wittiest and most provocative talents in post-war British theatre."
