Bloody Mess

Synopsis:
In their latest show - carefully choreographed mayhem like an end-of-the-pier show having an existential crisis - they do all this and more. they present a theatre full of bright gaudy creatures all vying for attention under the bright lights of the stage, who, like shadows, slip into the darkness and disappear when the lights go down and are extinguished. Just as we do. along the way there is plenty of fun in a scenario where theatre meets rock concert: a woman runs around in a gorilla suit throwing popcorn, two naked men carrying cardboard silver stars contemplate beautiful silences, roadies offer unhelpful advice, the end of the world is acted out with pom-pom balls and tinsel, and a woman changes her clothes and pours water over herself like a tragic weeping Greek heroine or maybe just an abandoned rock chick. This is one long, very knowing, wonderfully playful theatrical game on the nature of illusion, narrative and laughter that never becomes tedious or remote because it is so desperately human, so full of our frailties - our individual desire always to be centre-stage, to perform for the audience. - Lyn Gardner, Guardian

Notebook, The

Synopsis:
Forced Entertainments performance tells the story of twin brothers evacuated to the Hungarian countryside during World War II, to stay at their impoverished grandmothers farm. The unnamed narrators are social outsiders, surviving in and understanding the world by a harsh private code. Though strange and dysfunctional, the brothers are slowly revealed as struggling moralists, trying to live by consistent principles in a Central Europe crumbling into vice, cruelty and opportunism.

Notes:
Based on the award-winning novel The Notebook (1986), by Hungarian writer Agota Kristof. Devised by Robin Arthur, Tim Etchells, Richard Lowdon, Claire Marshall, Cathy Naden and Terry O'Connor

Quiet Volume, The

Synopsis:
the Quiet Volume is a whispered, self-generated and 'automatic' performance (autoteatro) for two at a time, exploiting the particular tension common to any library worldwide; a combination of silence and concentration within which different peoples' experiences of reading unfold. Two audience members / participants sit side-by-side. Taking cues from words both written and whispered they find themselves burrowing an unlikely path through a pile of books. the piece exposes the strange magic at the heart of the reading experience, allowing aspects of it we think of as deeply internal to lean out into the surrounding space, and to leak from one reader's sphere into another's.

Notes:
by Ant Hampton And Tim etchells. the piece is commissioned And produced by And for Ciudades Paralelas (Parallel Cities), A festival of portable AND site-specific work curated by Stefan Kaegi And Lola Arias running until Sep 24 in Berlin before moving to Buenos Aires in November And to Zurich in May 2011

Spectacular

Synopsis:
It is the end of the show. Fake blood has been splattered everywhere. the body count is high. the final victim drops to the floor writhing in agony. the body's twitches subside, and the survivors speak the epilogue. as you watch them, you notice that the exertions of dying are still takingtheir toll on the actor. the corpse is breathing heavily, and any minute now the dead will rise and take their bow at the end of the show. Tomorrow night they will live, die and rise again. We have all been there, and now Forced entertainment take us there again in a show whose name is a finely honed joke, but also achallenge to the audience. there is absolutely nothing spectacular about Spectacu-lar, which features a paunchy man in a skeleton suit on an empty stage describing a performance that is not taking place, and a woman who keeps on interrupting him and seizing the spotlight to perform a series of melo-Dramatic death scenes that rupture the unspectacular spectacle. Both these performers are making a spectacle of themselves, but alone they cannot smother the absence that fills the stage, the emptiness where the man in the skeleton costume tells us that there should be dancers wearing pink ostrich feathers and a band playing an upbeat ragtime number and a warm-up man cracking jokes. they can all be seen, but only if like that glorious moment in Peter Pan when we have to save Tinkerbell -the audience really believes. there are three of us in this theatrical marriage, and we all have to work pretty hard to keep it going.
