American Right
Synopsis:
In a present-day, California police station's interrogation rooms, Detective Angela Zulinski investigates the disappearance of Dr. LeBeau, a college theater arts professor. An anonymous tip and a severed pinky finger found in the home freezer of polemical political science professor Vince Anders targets him as Zulinski's prime suspect. Zulinski interrogates conservative professor Anders. He's uncooperative and denies any involvement in LeBeau's disappearance. But his propensity for aggressive politicking creates in her mind a strong motive for involvement and possibly for killing LeBeau. The two professors' political differences emerge, particularly LeBeau's history for reporting Anders to the college trustees for his unabashed teaching of conservatism. The stakes rise when Detective John Scott, Zulinski's partner and father-not particularly in that order-injects himself into the interrogation. He's proud of being the only liberal cop on a force of conservatives, but his own differences with Anders begin to taint the investigation, when he discloses that he is running for city council against an opponent for whom Anders serves as political consultant. The crash of political philosophies turns them deaf to the realities of human nature.

Art of Something, The
Synopsis:
Arthur Jones is an L.A. private eye suffering the early stages of a mid-life crisis, a failing 29-year marriage, and agoraphobia. Having reached the milestone age of 50, he sees the time left to reach his dream of becoming the successful, artistic man he believes himself to be being squandered by the crazy, marred and perverse profession that sinks him intimately into the lives of his clients. Through it all, as his world closes in around him and he finds he can't leave his office, Art investigates aberrant physical threats against a client and his bodyguard; he disarms a two-timing husband out to end his investigation of the husband's affair with his wife's sister; he conspires to get his screenplay about Siamese twins accused of murder produced by a big-time producer by deceiving a schizophrenic client's daughter who is the producer's production assistant; and he tracks down the woman stalking him and his wife Zoe. What's most surprising is that what seems "abnormal" is "normal" in the life of Arthur Jones, private eye, writer, painter, husband and father.

How to Make God Laugh
Synopsis:
Ally, a deceptively bright 18-year-old tennis champion, and Rena, a mom and part-time stand-up comedienne, who feels she's at the end of her performing career, meet in a tennis club locker room. Ally struggles to decide whether to win or lose a tennis match with a guy in her psych class, who is waiting outside. Ally confides in Rena that she made a bet with him, that if he can beat her at tennis she'll have sex with him. The unexpected results lead the women to find definitive qualities in themselves, qualities that expose everything they believed to be true to be delusions of surrender to a future they can't control.
Notes:

Perfect Quiet Place
Synopsis:
Perfect Quiet Place tells the story of a young girl who is trapped in a world where her perceived reality is becoming increasingly suspect. The action opens on Hannah with two of her schoolmates at a private high school in California. Her musical studies are forced to take a back seat to the disruptive and sometimes downright odd behavior of her friends and the school's night watchman, whose presence is a source of both concern and mockery for the teenage girls. Hannah brokers a fragile peace between her volatile friends and succeeds in conversing with the night watchman, but in doing so, becomes increasingly aware that what she knows as truth is far from reality. When things begin to disappear from her room, Hannah drifts between uncertainty and unease and is ultimately compelled to confront the ever-changing world in which she lives. She soon finds herself under the care of a doctor who further muddles her life picture, who Hannah believes is only curing her of everything good in her life. No longer able to trust her own mind, she is flung into a life and death battle for survival that culminates in a ferocious physical encounter that she can only escape by overcoming her own fear and rising above the chaos that surrounds her. In the end, she is left reaching out to something unknown, longing for escape or redemption.

Self Storage
Synopsis:
Thirteen years after his mother was raped, a man has tracked down who he believes to be the man who raped her. He imprisons the alleged rapist in his self-storage unit and interrogates him as he is tied to a chair and blinded by a hood. The hatred and pain the man has stored rages against the man he believes viciously attacked his mother. His mother reluctantly joins her son in the self-storage unit. Her sensory memory is tested when she demands that the attacker repeat things said on the night she was raped. Doubts are raised that her son has the right man, and he is compelled to come to terms with his own actions if he is wrong.
