AMY EVANS

Nationality:    African American
email:    n/a     Website:    n/a

Literary Agent:    The Agency (London) Ltd  represented by Nick Quin

Amy Evans was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She received her BA from Oberlin College in Ohio in 1996 and, after three months in Paris, moved to Germany as a Thomas J Watson fellow. She settled in Berlin just as a wave of young British dramatists (including Roy Williams, Winsome Pinnock, and Sarah Kane) was sweeping Europe with plays that were sharp, poetic, and largely political. Inspired by these writers, Evans moved to London where she pursued an MA in Theater Arts with a concentration in Writing for Performance. Afterwards she returned to Berlin to begin teaching a seminar in playwriting as a tool for social change at Humboldt University. Amy Evans began her career in theatre ten years ago, developing spoken word pieces in collaboration with a number of Berlin-based artists and musicians. She began writing for the stage full-time following the premiere of her award-winning first play, Achidi J's Final Hours, at the Finborough Theatre in London in 2004. Inspired by the true story of Senegalese immigrant Mareame N'Deye Sarr who died in a confrontation with German police in Aschaffenburg in July 2001, this play was the beginning of a series of pieces dealing with the topics of displacement, alienation and political violence. Amy has since been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, and her work has appeared in several publications, including Velocity: The Best of Apples and Snakes performance poetry anthology (Black Spring Press, 2003); Mythen, Masken, Subjekte: Kritische Weißseinforschung in Deutschland (Unrast, 2005), a multi-disciplinary publication on critical whiteness studies in Germany; and How Long Is Never? (Josef Weinberger, 2007), a collection of short plays written in response to the crisis in Darfur.

Achidi J's Final Hours

Synopsis:
Isa is black and from Cameroon, Alex is white and German. Between the summer of 1999 and the spring of 2001, they meet, fall in love and have a child. As the tension in the town increases, fuelled by anti-immigrant protesters and accusations of police brutality, the relationship is stretched to breaking point. Based on real events, the play is a startling depiction of contemporary Germany with powerful and disturbing resonances closer to home.

Daughter's Mother

Synopsis:
A powerful and redemptive exploration of the problems and misconceptions connected to suicide in communities of color, Daughter's Mother is inspired by the playwright's personal experience. What happens to loved ones left behind when the act is unforeseen and the motives remain murky? Evans' empathy in approaching these questions lifts the difficult subject matter to a sublime and revelatory pathos.

Notes:
Now in its seventh consecutive year, the multi-award-winning Finborough Theatre - the coalface of British Theatre - presents its annual explosion of new writing - Vibrant 2015 - A Festival of Finborough Playwrights, running on Sunday and Monday evenings and Tuesday and Thursday matinees between 25 October-12 November 2015. This year's festival features an eclectic and idiosyncratic selection of twelve staged readings of twelve new works by a dozen UK and international playwrights, both established and new, all discovered, developed or championed by the Finborough Theatre. Concentrated solely on full length works for the stage, this year's Vibrant 2015 - A Festival of Finborough Playwrights includes playwrights from England, Scotland, Wales, the United States and New Zealand. As always we strive to be as diverse as possible, and this year's festival once again features 50% female playwrights, together with work from African-American, East Asian, British-Lebanese, British-Israeli and Maori playwrights.

Most Unsatisfied Town, The

Synopsis:
Since his arrival in Germany, Laurence has done everything right. He applied for asylum, waited patiently for his papers, and found the kind of job no German would ever care to do. He is friendly to his neighbours, even the ones who tease his children in school, and cooperates with the police when they ask for his help. He's found the formula for survival, or so he thinks, until one day his closest friend mysteriously disappears. When the body turns up charred beyond recognition, Laurence is forced to take a closer look at the town he was so desperate to call home. Based on the true story of Oury Jalloh. there will be an optional post-show discussion on the issues of the play, which we hope will be led by lawyer Eddie Bruce-Jones who observed the trial proceedings of the Oury Jalloh case on which the play is based
