Stanley Eveling

STANLEY EVELING

  (1925 - 2008)

Nationality:    English
email:    n/a     Website:    n/a

Literary Agent:    The Agency (London) Ltd

Stanley was born in Newcastle upon Tyne. He wrote his first performed play when he was seven. It contained little dialogue and much rough and tumble and was bAnned by the school authorities. So for the next thirty or more years he spent his time in the Infantry during the Second World War, and then at Durham and Oxford Universities, studying first, English Literature and then Philosophy. He went on to teach the latter at Aberdeen and Aberystwyth and then finally edinburgh. He was for a number of years television critic for the Scotsman, this following his delayed return to play writing. After a spell writing plays for radio he passed to writing for the Theatre, where his play the Balachites was also the first British work to be produced at the newly opened Traverse Theatre. This encouraged him to continue and many more of his plays were performed there.

Mister

Mister
No more beautiful image of the play could have been found. In the long closing suicidal speech, when Mister at last joins the safe majority and lies down beside the effigy of Nelson to become an effigy himself, eveling draws the strands of imagery together in one of the finest pieces of contemporary Dramatic poetry we have heard in a long while.
