Steven Fales was born in Utah and grew up as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints - the Mormons. He was an eagle Scout. Was sent as a missionary to Portugal by the Mormon Church for two years. He graduated from Brigham Young University. It was while at University he realized he was gay but as the Church said it was a sin he tried to overcome his feelings by getting married. He has a son and daughter from this marriage. But his marriage was a sham and the Mormon authorities found out about his homosexuality and expelled him from the Church. He went to New York to take up acting but ended up a rent-boy and was heavily into drugs. Self loathing of what he had become brought him to his senses. "Confessions of a Mormon Boy" started out as a stand-up comedy routine until Steven expanded it into a play. By coincidence his ex-mother in law the Mormon poet Carol Lynn Pearson's late husband was also gay and she has written a book about her experiences "Goodbye, I Love You" - Random House.
