Blind Eye
Synopsis:
A war crimes trial drives a story of the conflicting interests of two international professionals at the top of their game - a human rights lawyer and a peace negotiator, and of the legacies parents leave their adult offspring. Her business is justice, his business is saving lives. For the prosecutor, Elizabeth Andersen, the case is her big break, both personal and professional; to be the first woman in a senior post and to prove to her Father Martin she's worthy to follow in his footsteps. A witness, initially anonymously, offers vital evidence. But he is old, and a man seizing his last opportunities has his own agenda. Elizabeth's friend and colleague Stefan Muller, international mediator, is the key to unlocking her case. However, though heroic under fire, Stefan is least able when it comes to his own emotions. Blind eye is about six characters who find themselves driven up against and beyond their own moral boundaries. they do bad things for good reasons; the effect of moral erosion, denial, the compulsion to "set the record straight". When push comes to shove, what do people actually do, especially when others are looking the other way?
Notes:
The showcase reading of Blind Eye in February 2009 was directed by Benet Catty (www.benetcatty.com/) with a professional cast of 9 actors. Blind Eye is produced in Lisbon, Portugal (in English) directed by Valerie Braddell with a multinational cast for a three-week run in March 2014.

It's the rugby team reunion one summer evening at a rural pub. there's been a fatal accident and only ed and Luke, never the closest of friends, show up. Mid-life, with time, money and mortality on their minds, they each have plenty to defend. Julie, the pub manager with her own battles to fight, is the unwitting catalyst that unravels their well-rehearsed self-inventions. ed sees a chance to break out, to have - perhaps even to be - what he desperately wants. But Luke, with apparently more to gain, is reluctant. And their perfect "lark" leaves Luke with all the material cards and ed having run out of time.
