Bedtimes And Bullies

Synopsis:
Bedtimes and Bullies is a Canadian adaptation of the highly popular play Max und Milli originally produced by the world-renowned GRIPS theatre in Berlin. While Bedtimes and Bullies touches on difficult issues such as bullying and conflict resolution, it is a fun, light-hearted play that emphasizes the positive effects of children seeking enjoyment from their own imaginations instead of relying on toys that suggest conflict or destruction. Siblings Kevin and Kelly share a big bedroom where they create imaginative games using bedclothes and stuffed toys. One day while they are in a local playground they are bullied by a boy named Peter, who threatens them with a cap gun. after a few encounters with Peter, Kevin and Kelly eventually report the incidents to their mother, who confronts Peter's father. the reasons for Peter's difficult behaviour become clear when his Father loses his own temper while refusing to accept responsibility for his son's actions. While the parents are unable to resolve this conflict, Kevin and Kelly eventually befriend Peter, inviting him home and drawing him into their games. In a positive and creative environment, Peter's aggressive behaviour dissolves to the point that even his own Father does not recognize him.

Chasing the Money

Synopsis:
Kip tries to "get rich quick" through gambling - only to learn the hard way that the odds are stacked against him. Magic tricks and sleight-of-hand are used in this production to emphasize the illusory nature of getting ahead by winning money. With the news increasingly dominated by issues about problem gambling, this look at the ease in which we can all be trapped into the "easy money" dream inspires timely discussion with today's teens. Depression and tragedy can be the outcome of making choices based on chance and luck, and this play doesn't hold back in examining these issues.

Heracles

Synopsis:
Heracles introduces young audiences to the fascinating world of Greek mythology. Young audiences will learn the myths of Orion, the Cyclops, the Centaurs and the Hydra. Heracles, the Greek mythological hero, has recently been killed in a desperate battle with the centaur. His nephew, Iolaus, comes in quest of Heracles' bones to bring back to his soldiers as inspiration to continue their battle to forge an athenian kingdom. He meets the fates, Clotho, Laechesis and atropos, who are weaving their tapestry. they invite Iolaus to view a re-enactment of Heracles' adventures so he may better understand the logic of his famous uncle's event-filled life. the Fates take us through the meeting of Heracles and his future wife Megara, whom he saved from a marauding lion. their marriage has a tragic ending, however; Heracles, in a fit of madness caused by a disturbing dream, kills Megara and their new born son. Soon after, he is visited by an Oracle who instructs him, as penance, to cleanse the earth of all creatures that bring misery to men. Heracles' first battle is with the Hydra which he kills handily. Next, he rescues the king's daughter Deianiera from achelous the Bull Man. as he continues on his quest, however, he is duped by the centaur and, ironically, is killed by the poison of his own arrow. When the Fates have finished relating his life story, Heracles' cremated remains have cooled enough to sift through to find the bones. To his dismay, Iolaus finds no bones and is instructed by the fates to use the inspiration of his uncle's story to lead the men to athens and to create a great kingdom in his honour.

Liars

Liars
Liars brings the ravages of alcoholism to centre stage. the play illustrates the effects of addictive behavior over long periods of time, and the impact of dysfunctional parents on their children. at the end of the play, the juxtaposition of Lenny's positive attitude and Jace's negative one make a poignant statement about personal choices and are an excellent springboard for audience follow-up discussions. Lenny and Jace are classmates. Despite apparently different personalities, they have one thing in common: each have an alcoholic parent. When Lenny is not in school, she spends her time doing household chores and looking after her alcoholic mother. Jace must contend with his father's alcohol-induced blackouts and changes in personality between bouts of being sober and intoxicated. Jace's reaction to his father's abuse is low self-esteem and motivation. Lenny, used to taking care of her mother, is drawn to Jace, feeling she can help him and take care of him. Lenny and Jace's big date is ruined, however, when Jace's Father gets drunk and reneges on his promise to let Jace have the car. after the ensuing confrontation, Jace storms out, swearing never to return. On their date, Lenny and Jace share their experiences of living with alcoholism in their homes. In an imaginative scene-within-a-scene, they each envision what it could be like if their home life were happier. Telling each other their stories, the teens realize that they can confide in each other. However, Jace comes to the conclusion that they will never be able to change their parents' destructive behaviour; Lenny, on the other hand, commits to dealing with the denial of alcohol abuse at home. the next time the two teens meet, Lenny has realized she cannot fight the battle against alcoholism on her own and invites Jace to join her to get some outside help. However, Jace has found comfort in other addictions, leaving Lenny to discover her own path to serenity.

Mirror Game

Mirror Game
Mirror Game shows the effects on children of growing up in an abusive family environment. the serious nature of the play is punctuated by humorous moments that make the subject material accessible. Despite the difficult situations the characters face, there is hope that the cycle of abuse can be broken. Bob, Sara, Maggie and Luke are four teenagers dealing with teenage hang-ups such as body image, peer acceptance and relationships. their inter-relationships are affected by varying physical, emotional and psychological abuse in their respective families. Bob's mother puts her son down constantly, pressuring him to achieve, while his Dad neglects him. Sara tries to avoid being home due to the violent behaviour of her mother's abusive boyfriend. However, she doesn't escape the pattern of her mother's dysfunctional behaviour; thinking she deserves no better, Sara dates Luke, who also has a violent Father and acts out his resulting anger by controlling Sara. Maggie's Father is continually away on business, which drives her mother into alcoholism. Having learned to take care of her mother, Maggie feels attracted to people and activities that she can "save" while suffering from low esteem about her own appearance. Maggie has a secret crush on Bob; Bob, in turn, is infatuated with the apparently perfect Sara. Meanwhile Sara sinks into a deepening depression as Luke's jealous nature causes him to become violent towards her. When Sara's despondence leads to self-destructive behaviour, Bob and Maggie come to the rescue, supporting her and helping her find professional assistance.

New Canadian Kid

Synopsis:
Both poignant and funny, New Canadian Kid is an international favourite, and has been performed world-wide under the genEric title "New Kid". Nick is a young immigrant from the fictitious country of "Homeland". He struggles to fit in at his new school in Canada, unable to communicate in the language of his fellow students. Nick's frustration is effectively portrayed through a clever theatrical device: Nick and his family speak english, while all the Canadians speak gibberish. His peers mimic his accent and language, making fun of him and tricking him into making a fool of himself. He is the subject of much racial bullying and name-calling and his home is vandalized. Nick's frustration of not being able to communicate is shared by his mother who has difficulty with simple tasks like buying groceries. Nick's Father works long hours to support the family, so Nick assumes the role of caregiver for his mother, helping her to cope in their new home. Gradually Nick begins to connect with his peers, sharing small jokes and gestures in place of words. His new friend Mench helps him navigate through new experiences in taste, language and game-playing. the play ends on a positive note, with Nick being accepted and his mother starting to learn english.

Seesaw

Seesaw
Meet four ordinary kids coping with the ups and downs of their lives; Paige a popular yet insecure girl, adam the tough bully who is also a budding artist, shy Josh who learns magic tricks in order to become invisible, and Charla the new girl who wants to be everybody's friend. This new production of a Green Thumb favourite helps students examine the influences youth get from pop culture (violence, body image, materialism) and how these affect the way they interact with schoolmates and their parents. It's about self esteem, fitting in, and "doing the right thing". SeeSaw also examines the various types of bullying behavior - from the physical to the emotional. Using actors and an array of puppets, SeeSaw is a fast paced exploration of the shifting nature of relationships, the value and importance of friendships and focuses on the creative mind and imagination as a crucial part of learning and growing.

a light and humorous play that stresses the value of friendship as a means of overcoming feelings of loneliness and isolation. Children will learn the importance of showing respect to others and that generosity and honesty are key elements in fostering friendships that can last a lifetime. a charming exploration of the meaning of loneliness and friendship and an excellent opportunity for advanced puppetry. Short Tree shares a patch of ground with two big trees that tower over him. the big trees are so busy talking to one another that Short Tree feels ignored and lonely. One day two lumberjacks come and chop down the big trees leaving him without anyone to watch over him. Wondering why he was spared and feeling he would be happier as a toothpick, Short Tree suddenly hears a horrifying racket and fears it is the lumberjacks returning to chop him down. But it's only Bird, who loves to sing - but whose singing is raucous and out of tune. Much to Short Tree's delight, he and Bird quickly become good friends. When Bird must fly south for the winter however, Small Tree must once again cope with his feelings of abandonment. Soon after Bird departs, a whole new world opens up for Short Tree. He begins to meet an entire cast of eccentric characters that all convey messages of friendship. Skin

Skin
Skin exposes audiences to contemporary race relations as seen through the eyes of four teenagers experiencing racial prejudice at their high school. It is a poignant demonstration of the common need for respect and acceptance whatever one's ethnic background. each character in Skin faces different challenges due to their background. Phiroza moved to Canada from India as a young child, but still gets bullied and is excluded by her peers. although born and raised in Canada, Karen is assumed to lack intelligence and an honest nature because of her family's aboriginal heritage. Karen overcomes the unfair treatment she receives from her teacher, succeeding in her transfer from vocational to academic study despite his prediction that she will fail. Tuan recently arrived in Canada as a Vietnamese refugee and works as a cleaner outside of school hours. His hope to earn enough money to fund his parents' dream to join him and his sister in Canada are dashed when he is unjustly fired. the strength of character that develops in Phiroza, Karen and Tuan is contrasted by the suicide of Lo, Tuan's friend and fellow Vietnamese refugee, who ultimately gives in to the pressure of feeling like an outsider.
Note: there are two versions of Skin - one based in Toronto, one in Vancouver - reflecting the ethnic makeup of immigrants in each respective area. In the Toronto version, the character of Karen is replaced by Jennifer, whose Father is Jamaican and whose mother is from Trinidad. With permission from Green Thumb theatre, characters may be adapted to suit regional demographics.

Young people can be encouraged to use creative play with their friends rather than rely on commercial toys to fulfill their entertainment needs. Bobby's Father owns the Toys by Trumm toy factory, which is the chief employer of the town. the children tend to keep their distance from Bobby since he taunts them with expensive toys from his father's factory, then asks for money for the privilege of playing with them. Jason eventually succumbs to temptation and offers Bobby some money in order to try a popular robot toy. He soon regrets this since the robot breaks while Jason is playing with it. Jason's life becomes even more complicated when his mother is laid off at the toy factory. the children visit Mr. Trumm at his office to try and convince him to give Jason's mother her job back, but are unsuccessful. the children then devise a different strategy. they invent an imaginative game that does not require any commercial toys. the next time Bobby approaches them with the latest fantastic Trumm toy, the children ignore him and won't let him participate in their new game unless he can convince his Father to reconsider his decision. Jealous that the others don't need him any more, Bobby tells his Father about the children's creation. In turn, Mr. Trumm envisions the new game as a money-making opportunity and agrees to meet with the other children. Jason's mother is re-hired and Jason, Kim and elli teach Bobby that creating games by using the imagination can be just as much fun as any commercial toy.

War

War
the propensity for aggression and teenage violence is the premise of this hard-hitting Drama that scrutinizes the darker side of being a teen in today's society. War provides an excellent platform for teens to discuss the underlying causes and effects of violence within their own community. andrew is an acting student who wants to make it big in action movies. Tommy believes he will soon be flying F-16s for the Canadian air Force. Brad is convinced that his aggressive behaviour playing hockey will earn him a position in the NHL. Shane is the elusive one; he is feared by others because of the rumour that he once killed someone, but in truth is haunted by memories of his past. When Tommy and his girlfriend breakup, he suspects that andy has been the reason for her decision. Tommy challenges andy to a fight after school and enlists his best friend Brad to act as his "backup". However they are surprised when Shane suddenly shows up and supports andy. Intimidated by Shane's reputation they are frightened away. Shane and andy develop an unexpected friendship when they discover that they can help each other out. andy wants to learn to stand up for himself, and in return finds Shane some work training actors how to fight. Meanwhile, the friendship between Brad and Tommy drastically changes when Brad's taunts force Tommy to commit an act of violence. Seeking safety in numbers, Brad approaches andy, asking if he can be friends with him and Shane. This gives andy a chance to teach Brad a lesson on what it is like to be bullied. andy's growing glamourization of violence is undercut, however, when Shane is fatally wounded. the other characters are then left to examine how violence begets more violence and is not a satisfying solution to conflict.
