Grand Hotel - the Musical
version of Vicki Baum's Grand Hotel, set in Rome post-World War II instead of Berlin post-World War I, and the old man Kringelein has been made the focus of the action. In the musical he is an old scullery worker who, learning he hasn't long to live, takes his life savings and moves upstairs "where the halls are full of music"; singing requirements for this role are modest but female lead (an opera star) must sing well; good singers required for part of the Baron and the semi-prostitute

Timbuktu!
Setting: Timbuktu, in the ancient empire of Mali, West Africa. In the year 1361 (of Islam 752). Program Note: the Real City of Timbuktu: "Timbuktu was Moslem, black, opulent, and remote. Travelers died in attempts to cross the Sahara in search of this fabled city, and so its reputation grew even faster than its wealth. When one of the rulers, Mansa MUSA, made a pilgrimage to Mecca in the year 1324, he brought with him a vast retinue of thousands and gave away so much gold that the price of gold fell ten to fifteen percent in the money markets of Cairo."
