Shakespeare In Saigon
Synopsis:
an unusual and moving love story with Shakespeare as matchmaker. Retired english Literature teacher David has fallen on hard times. He lives alone in a rented flat in a working-class suburb with a high non-english speaking population. By accident he meets his neighbour, Thanh, a young woman recently arrived from Vietnam. She speaks no english and David speaks no Vietnamese. David's mother, heard but never seen, gives her miserable son even more cause to be miserable. David's salvation comes when he decides to teach Thanh to speak english. Well not exactly english but rather Elizabethan english - the language of Shakespeare. Thus begins an unusual love affair in which both discover the suffering of each other, find hope for happier times and rejoice in the beauty of a language which has stood the test of time. Fabulous reviews.
