Trial of Hermann Ethe, The
Synopsis:
Tells the true story of Professor Hermann Ethe and his wife, Harriet. Professor Ethe was a popular and well-respected member of staff at the university in Aberystwyth, but the outbreak of the First World War resulted in him being run out of the seaside town by a mob of 2,000 people. Though set against the backdrop of the First World War, the play addresses much broader themes. First and foremost this is a love story; it's the story of how Hermann and Harriet must fight to save their marriage whilst being put through a harrowing ordeal. It also tackles the general issues of war, privacy, and our attitude to living alongside people who are different to us; issues as relevant today as they were a century ago.
