Afterlife

Afterlife
Max Reinhardt, one the greatest impresarios of theatrical history, had a lifelong ambition - to dissolve the boundary between theatre and the world it portrays. each year at the Salzburg Festival he directed a famous morality play, everyman, about God sending Death to summon a representative of mankind for judgment. the victim he chooses is a man who, like Reinhardt, rejoices in his wealth and all the pleasures that money can buy. then in 1938 Hitler declares his own day of reckoning and sends Death into austria - whereupon Reinhardt, a Jew, is left as naked and vulnerable as everyman himself. afterlife is the story of how Reinhardt achieves his great ambition; though in a way he can scarcely have foreseen.

In comes Leslie, a new young assistant with a passion for organisation who transforms the office and the lives of its inhabitants into something orderly and neat - and also arid and colourless. an announcement that the paper is to close leads to a struggle between chaos and order.

Here

Here
A Michael Frayn play in which a couple move into an empty room and begin to construct their life together. The responsibility is daunting, especially when they reflect that it has taken the whole of the history of the world to get them together in this particular place at this particular time. A steady drip of monosyllabic questions and fudged answers create a hell of indecision as the duelling protagonist endlessly circle.

Matchbox Theatre: An Evening of Short Entertainments

Matchbox Theatre: An Evening of Short Entertainments
In the autumn of 2014 dramatist and novelist Michael Frayn published his latest and most unusual book, Matchbox Theatre - a series of conversations, sketches and meditations with the Michael Frayn twist - which takes a look at how we live today. Blurring the boundaries between his work for page and for stage, it begs the question - are these mini-plays or short stories?

Sneeze, The

Synopsis:
four comic vaudevilles by Chekhov plus adaptations of four of Chekhov's short stories. the following description is from the show's press release: "the Sneeze is constructed as a tour de force for the actors, who get to play a series of different roles, one after the other, allowing the audience to relish their charm and versatility. the characters are a mostly hilarious collection of Chekhovian nebbishes: the anxious and undertalented lady writer who tries to read her five-act play out loud to a famous playwright; the minor government official who sneezes on a prominent government official; the burly Russian who subjects his delicate French visitor to rough country philosophy and gobs of hot mustard; the old actor on an empty stage; and the gentle man, scared of his wife, who fails to give a speech on the evils of tobacco."
