A-Grade         And Then, The Lights Went Out         Sea of Green         Stillborn         Year Off, A

A-Grade

Synopsis:
What if everything, and everyone, was owned by someone else? A hundred years from now, governments as we know them have ceased to exist. Nationalities and religions have faded into obscurity and every culture has been commercialized. Every single thing on Earth, from every scrap of land to the last piece Mozart ever wrote, is owned by a corporation or conglomerate. Every human being is an employee... or a tradeable commodity... from birth. Even your spouse is carefully selected and shipped to you by Human Resources. So what happens when there's a mis-shipment?

And Then, The Lights Went Out

Synopsis:
A chilling saga of dames, deceit and writer's block. Staring down an impossible deadline, Thomas Levine is starting to unravel. Whether brought on by the heat or the stress, the fictional characters from his detective novel-in-progress are dropping in on him in his apartment, offering literary advice and drinking all of his liquor. With the publisher breathing down his neck and the landlady clamoring for the rent, Thomas will have to find some way to pull it all together and write himself out of this mess... before the lights go out.

Sea of Green

Synopsis:
A hot summer day in the city. Election day. As the polls close and ballots are counted, people everywhere are jubilant over the expected defeat of the incumbent President. But when the results come back overwhelmingly (and suspiciously) in the President's favor, the people's hopes turn quickly to despair. . .and then to public outrage. Violent riots wrack the city, and as police and protesters clash in the streets and heroes and martyrs emerge, the people must struggle against an oppressive regime to have their voices heard. . .and to survive. Based on the 2009 Iranian Election protests and written almost entirely in poetic verse, Sea of Green chronicles the rise and fall of a revolution as perceived by a wide cross-section of society; bakers and shopkeeps, foreign journalists, militiamen and mothers. Despite it's real-world inspirations, the play is not set in any one specific country, nor is it a history; it could happen anywhere.

Notes:
First workshopped by Downstage Theatre under the name Stillborn. Subsequent dramaturgy by Brian Dooley prior to it's debut at the Walterdale Playhouse. Winner of the Uprising National Playwriting Competition, and selected to be part of the Cradle to the Stage production at the Walterdale.
