Hippolyte Jean Giraudoux , b. Oct. 29, 1882, d. Jan. 31, 1944, was a French dramatist who wrote 15 plays, most initially staged by the actor-director Louis Jouvet and later internationally acclaimed. Giraudoux was also a prose writer and served France as a diplomat and government official. Giraudoux was born in the village of Bellac and studied at the Ecole Normale Superieure. In his youth he traveled extensively - to Germany, Italy, the Balkans, Canada, and the United States, where he spent a year (1906-07) as an instructor at Harvard. Returning to France, he served in World War I, was twice wounded, and became the first writer ever to be awarded the wartime Legion of Honor. His worldwide importance rests on such plays as Amphitryon 38 (1929; Eng. trans., 1938), Judith (1931), Tiger at the Gates (1935; Eng. adaptation of La Guerre de Troie n'aura pas lieu, 1955, by Christopher Fry), Ondine (1939; Eng. trans., 1961), and The Madwoman of Chaillot (1945; Eng. trans., 1949), which was published and produced posthumously. Giraudoux also wrote five novels, the best known being My Friend from Limousin (1922; Eng. trans., 1923) and Bella (1926; Eng. trans., 1927), and numerous short stories. He was one of France's outstanding essayists during the interwar years, best known for such literary studies as Racine (1930) and such political studies as Pleins Pouvoirs (Full Powers, 1939). At the start of World War II he served as minister of information under Premier edouard Daladier. Giraudoux's dramatic and narrative style is a rich and inimitable blend of allusive prose, allegory, fantasy, and political and psychological perceptions. He tempered tragic themes with rueful comedy, as though he wished to unite the contrasting qualities of Racine, Moliere, Maeterlinck, and Baudelaire.

the story of Jupiter's cuckolding of Amphitryon has come in a variety of theatrical styles over the centuries. Plautus, by all accounts, had great success with it as a burlesque for the Romans; Moliere turned it into a farce, of course; Kleist made a romance of it; and Giraudoux fashioned it into a fantasy. In the new version, Mr Overmyer seems to aim for the sophistication of a Saturday Night Live skit, a sort of Classics Comics for the theater.

Synopsis: | The story follows the outlines of the legend of Amphitryon, Alkmena, and Jupiter, in which Jupiter descends to Earth, impersonates the General Amphitryon - Alkmena's husband - and makes love to her. Difficulties arise when the father of the gods is met with stubborn resistance. For Alkmena is faithful to her husband. Even the greatest god can win her only after much ungodlike embarrassment and, in desperation, the unsportsmanlike device of impersonating Amphitryon himself.

Synopsis: | The play is a kind of poetic and comic fable set in the twilight zone of the not-quite-true. At the Cafe Chez Francis, a group of promoters plot to tear up Paris in order to unearth the oil which a prospector believes he has located in the neighborhood. These grandiose plans come to the attention of The Madwoman of Chaillot who is ostensibly not normal in her mind but who is soon shown to be the very essence of practical worldly goodness and common sense. She sees through the crookedness of the prospector and insists that the world is being turned into an unhappy place by the thieves and those who are greedy for worldly goods and power. At a tea party attended by other "mad" women of Paris, she has brought together representatives of the despoilers of the earth and wreckers of its happiness, and has them tried and condemned to extermination. In a scene which mounts into the realms of high poetic comedy, she sends the culprits one by one, lured by the scent of oil and undreamed-of riches, into a bottomless pit which opens out of her cellar. The exodus of the wicked is accompanied by another and more beautiful miracle: Joy, justice and love return to the world again.
