In the Penal Colony

Synopsis:
a prison, disconnected from the modern world. a man unaware of his crime and about to be executed without trial. a belief that only through the most horrific death imaginable will the condemned see the error of their ways. When an outsider is plunged into this nightmare world will he have the conscience to intervene? Would you? Philip Glass's compulsive and beautifully haunting music is instantly recognisable. From symphonies and operas to award-winning film scores such as the Truman Show, the Hours and Notes on a Scandal, he simultaneously breaks boundaries and captivates audiences. In this darkly unsettling opera, Glass rakes up the tension to a taut, unforgettable climax as judge, victim and witness stare into the abyss.

Perfect American

Synopsis:
the Perfect American is a fictionalized biography of Walt Disney's final months. We discover Walt's delusions of immortality via cryogenic preservation, his tirades alongside his Abraham Lincoln talking robot, his utopian visions and his backyard labyrinth of toy trains. Yet, if at first Walt seems to have a magic wand granting him all his wishes, we soon discover that he is as tortured as the man who crosses his story, Wilhelm Dantine, a cartoonist who worked for him, illustrating sequences for Sleeping Beauty. Dantine fascinated by the childlike omnipotence of a man who identifies with Mickey Mouse desperately seeks Disney's recognition at the risk of his own ruin. Walt's wife Lillian, his confidante and perhaps his mistress Hazel, his brother Roy, his children Diane and Sharon, his close and ill-treated collaborators, and famous figures such as Andy Warhol, all contribute to the opera's animation, its feel for the life of the Disney world.

Notes:
Based on Peter Stephan Jungk's novel and written by Philip Glass, one of the world's most important composers, the Perfect American imagines the final years of Walt Disney's life, including mythical imaginings of Abraham Lincoln and Andy Warhol. This latest opera from Glass, his 24th, was commissioned by eNO and Teatro Real Madrid to mark his 75th birthday.

Trial, The

Synopsis:
On his 30th birthday Josef K. is arrested by an unknown authority for an unspecified crime. All his efforts to understand the charge are foiled. Those around him are deeply concerned that he is not taking the case seriously. On the eve of his 31st birthday two men arrive for K. He goes with them and guides them through the town to a quarry. They place his head on a block and stab him through the heart.

Notes:
Music by Philip Glass, libretto by Christopher Hampton, based on the novel by Franz Kafka. The Trial is Philip Glass's second 'pocket' opera based on the writings of Franz Kafka, and his first work created specifically for Music Theatre Wales, in celebration of the company's 25th birthday. Glass has a long relationship with the company, describing them as 'wonderful to work with& they seem to like these "odd" pieces of mine, and they do them very well. I think of my pocket operas as neutron bombs small, but packing a terrific punch'.
