Everything Is Wondrous
Synopsis:
Everything Is Wondrous is the story of two friends and a mix tape. It's a true story, told in the words of the two people involved. Jo Milne, from Gateshead, has Usher syndrome, a condition that affects both hearing and vision: she was born profoundly deaf and her sight is progressively getting worse. However, in 2014 cochlear implant surgery gave her the chance of hearing for the first time. In anticipation of a successful operation, she asked her friend Tremayne Crossley to make her a mix tape featuring a song from every year of her life, which would be the first music that she would ever hear. The play reminds us how important and immediate music can be in our lives, though we often take it for granted. It tells of their friendship, how Tremayne made his choices and how Jo is catching up with forty years of musical sounds. Inspired by Julia's blog.
Notes:
Part of "Rendezvous". Poet, novelist and playwright Julia Darling died at the age of 48 in 2005, having been diagnosed with breast cancer in late 1994. From 2000 to 2002 she was writer-in-residence at Newcastles Live Theatre. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of her death, Live has commissioned five women writers, both established and emerging but all with a connection to the region, to write short plays inspired by her work.
