David Greig

DAVID GREIG

  (1969 - )

Nationality:    Scottish
email:    n/a     Website:    Click here

Literary Agent:    Casarotto Ramsay and Associates Ltd  represented by Mel Kenyon

David Greig was born in Edinburgh in 1969. He spent much of his childhood in Jos, Nigeria during the 1970's where his father worked in the construction industry. In 1980 his family returned to live in Edinburgh where he went to school. His first involvement with Theatre was with Edinburgh Youth Theatre where he acted in a number of shows. In 1987 he went to Bristol University to study English and Drama. He graduated from Bristol University in 1990 and began to work with Graham Eatough and Nick Powell as Suspect Culture on the Edinburgh Fringe. Over two years he wrote and directed five shows and was twice nominated for the Guardian Student Drama award and won a Scotsman Fringe First for Stalinland. In 1993 he moved to Glasgow where Stalinland was produced by the Citizen's Theatre and he received my first professional commissions from the Traverse Theatre and the Royal Court. Since then he has written many plays, most of which have premiered in Scotland. From 2005 to 2007 he was the first Dramaturg of the National Theatre of Scotland. Since his first main stage production 'Europe,' at the Traverse in 1996, his work has been produced extensively abroad. His plays have been translated and produced in most of the countries of Europe, the USA and Canada, Brazil, Australia, Japan and Korea. He continued my association with Suspect Culture through the 1990's and into the 2000's. With Graham Eatough, Nick Powell and Ian Scott he worked to develop a Theatre process in which writing and narrative was part of but did not overwhelm the other aspects of production. Suspect Culture became a professional company based in Glasgow in 1995 with their first production 'One Way Street' at the Traverse. the company received a core funding in 1996 and thereafter they developed and produced new work to great acclaim in Scotland and Europe. Suspect Culture lost their funding in 2008 and are now dormant as a Theatre company. Graham, Nick, Ian and David all continue to collaborate with each other, however, in work for other companies or in other contexts. David has worked extensively as a workshop leader on projects to teach or develop playwriting. He has a particular relationship with writers in the middle east. He has worked extensively with playwrights in Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Tunisia and Morocco. In Damascus a group of writers with whom he worked went on to found 'the Street' - a group dedicated to producing and developing new work in Syria. In 2010 they produced a book 'stories of Spirit and Cement.' For which David wrote the introduction. He also worked with April De Angelis on a major two year collaboration between the Royal Court Theatre and the British Council. the plays produced in that project were published in English and in Arabic and have been given performed readings New York, London, Beirut and Cairo. From 2006 David has been on the board of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. He lives in Fife with his partner, Lucie and two children, Annie and Rory.

Being Norwegian

Being Norwegian
In Being Norweigan, Sean, just out of prison, invites Lisa back to his flat for a drink. Lisa says she's Norwegian. She feels Sean must be Norwegian too. In this dark, funny encounter two outsiders reach out to each other across the deep fjords of the heart. "In Norway we're used to darkness in people's heads. We even prefer it. Because if there is no darkness, then what in heaven's name are you thinking about? We Norwegians think people who are happy are perhaps just a little bit above themselves, don't you?"

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
. . .the glorious new musical at Drury Lane has something crucial over the two fine film versions: a real sense of invention and improvisation, and a jack-in-a-box theatrical performance of style, energy and brilliance by Douglas Hodge as Willy Wonka. . . David Greig's sharp libretto sensibly sticks to the steely structure of the story. . .Nigel Planer's Grandpa Joe - beautifully done as a cheery old war veteran with medals and music hall memories. . . the staging by Mendes and choreographer Peter Darling has a sort of vibrant conservatism to it that seems absolutely right for the material, and not least among the available marvels are Paul Pyant's lighting and Paul Arditti's sound design. No situations vacant in Drury Lane for some time now, I imagine. - henry Hitchings, evening Standard

Notes:
theatre Uncut co-artistic director Emma Callander said, "theatre Uncut was created to raise debate and galvanise action around political issues that affect all of our lives. We do this by making our plays available to as many people as possible. "We feel honoured to be working with writers of such high calibre and it thrills me that performances of these powerful short plays will be happening simultaneously across the world, from Scarborough to South Africa. "With the continued cuts to public services in the UK against a landscape of civil unrest and enforced austerity across the world, the need to speak out in resistance is stronger now than ever before."

Events, The

Events, The
Screams echo through corridors. A forest echoes with the sound of gunfire. At Claire's choir rehearsal, something terrible happens. David Greig's daring new play asks how far forgiveness will stretch in the face of atrocity. Featuring local choirs and a soaring soundtrack, the Events tells of tragedy, obsession and our destructive desire to fathom the unfathomable.

Once in a while, in the midst of responsibilities to partners, children, work, it becomes necessary to recalibrate one's life and push the boat out. Two old mates, Skip and Crew, decide it's time for an adventure. A micro Odyssey, setting out into the Flow to sleep on an abandoned island. the boat has been scrubbed and painted, the banjo is packed, sails hoisted and they've set their course over several large drams.

Notes:
Found at Sea is made from a new sequence of poems by acclaimed Scottish novelist and poet, Andrew Greig (Loch of the Green Corrie, Summit Fever, That Summer) which tells the story of a real trip he took to the uninhabited island of Cava, a place which turns out to have a haunting history of its own. Found at Sea began life as a rehearsed reading as part of our award-winning Dream Plays (Scenes from a Play I'll Never Write) in the 2012 Traverse Festival programme. Join us on the next stage of the show's voyage - an intimate, low-fi, work in progress production in the belly of the Traverse, encompassing poetry, storytelling, music and song.

Futurology - A Global Revue

Synopsis:
lt is the 14th UN Conference of the Future, and the subject is climate change. the delegates have gathered at their Perspex desks to hammer out a Kyoto-style agreement. but they seem more interested in national rivalries, free-market enterprise and post-conference sex than saving the planet. Only the poor woman from a sinking Pacific island 465 miles south of Fiji has any sense of urgency, and she is as powerless as the rioting mob on the streets outside the meeting room. What turns a white-collar satire into extraordinary theatre is the repeated segues into flamboyant cabaret in Graham Eatough's production for Suspect Culture and the National theatre of Scotland. When the delegates aren't pontificating behind laptops. they are stepping out into tangos, torch songs or gymnastic routines. When they can't settle on a joint manifesto, they break into a rousing sing-along worthy of Chitty Chilly Bang Bang. the procrastination continues while Rome burns, the company presenting a heightened vision of a species running headless into the unknown. uncertain whether to celebrate humanity's gift for artistry and spectacle, or to put an end to mankind for fear of a frightening future. the apocalyptic conclusion shows our egotistical, vainglorious and confused actions for the pathetic gestures they are, though the play's political ambivalence adds more to our eco--confusion than it clarifies.

Gordon Brown: A Life In theatre

Synopsis:
It's the night before the election and Gordon Brown can't sleep. Tomorrow he will go before the public to finally claim victory or accept defeat. In a fitful night of dreams and memories he casts his mind across a political career that spans two decades at the top. Does he deserve to win? What's at stake if he loses? But most important, what is there left to say? Gordon Brown: a Life in theatre will be a "freewheeling exploration of contemporary politics from inside the fractured mind of a Prime Minister on verge of an electoral breakdown." the script will be written during election week to capture the immediacy and excitement of the election and the unfolding events of the week. the play will then be performed as staged readings on 6 May itself. eight Scottish playwrights will work together to produce the finished play which will be directed by one of the playwrights, David Greig. Joining Greig will be Rona Munro, Peter arnot, Vicki Liddelle, Gabriel Quigley, andy Duffy, Alan Wilkins and David Ireland. Speaking about the project, Traverse theatre artistic Director Dominic Hill, said, "Scottish theatre has a tradition of responding through theatre to events in the political world. Gordon Brown himself was a Board member of the famous political theatre company 7:84 which created, amongst others, the masterpiece the Cheviot, the Stag and the Black Black Oil. I've always wanted the Traverse to sit within the immediate cultural and political life of the nation. all theatre is political in that it is about and affects us, the way we live our lives, our position in society and the world." the performances will take place at the Traverse at lunchtime on election day, and again on election night, where the Traverse Bar Cafe will screen the election results throughout.

the play is political in its subject, but it doesn't take sides: both characters get to have a say. Dramatically it is more interesting in a way to hear Dan's attack on the pessimism of the green movement. Though Lucy got some equally juicy stuff to get her teeth into too.

Lament

Lament
Lament is a poemfor the theatre. Funny and touching, honest and playful. It examines the sadnesses and absurdities of the state we're in today - or, at least, the state we think we're in. Asked for their favourite sad song, their dream future, their assessment of current global politics, the answers of Suspect Culture's five performers unfurl as a succession of scenes and snapshots. What emerges is a play which occupies the very present space between the personal and the political and acknowledges the heartfelt nostalgia we feel for a world today that perhaps never existed. - in "the Suspect Culture book", Oberon Books (2013) >>>

Lanark

Synopsis:
A young man arrives in a dying city with seashells in his pockets. He doesn't know who he is, or how he got here. He goes by the only name he can think of: Lanark. This theatrical re-imagining of Alasdair Gray's seminal work takes us from the Dragon Chambers to the Cathedral of Unthank, from post-war Glasgow School of Art to the sinister underground Institute, from the heavenly city of Provan to the hellish Elite Cafe, combining science fiction, realism, fantasy, and playful storytelling. Mainstream
This story of two people who meet in a three-star seaside hotel and quietly and movingly unravels the fabric of two ordinary lives. they ask questions and let secrets slip. But in their desire to communicate they find that the more they tell, the less they reveal. An elegant game with theatre and convention, four performers play either of the two characters. A single encounter breaks apart into any number of different possible stories. And as these stories unravel, so too does a drama of intimacy, disclosure and desire. - in "the Suspect Culture book", Oberon Books (2013) >>>

Miniskirts Of Kabul

Miniskirts Of Kabul
David Greig's contribution features an imaginary meeting between a British journalist played by Jemima Rooper and the former President Najibullah (Ramon Tikaram). This takes place as Taliban fighters approach Kabul, terrifyingly for all concerned thanks to an impressive soundscape from Tom Lishman that could easily induce nightmares. the fantasy adds humour without diminishing the powerful story of a man who spent four years leading his country with Russian help and then as many more under house arrest in a UN compound. the discussion paints a picture of the deposed leader while also explaining some of the politics and the surprising fact that the leaders of the various factions (Modernist-Communist/Conservative/Islamist) were all at Kabul University together in 1973. the ending seems gruesome, even if only imagined, but turns out to be as nothing when compared with the last play of the afternoon. . . .

Naked Rambler, The

Synopsis:
the Naked Rambler is a very funny, surreal satire laughing at ludicrous laws that have made Stephen Gough spend 6 years in prison because he likes rambling without clothes on. Two police officers played by Tam Dean Burn and Ashley Smith work in crimeless Dalgety Bay near to Dunfermline. there, they encounter TNR and, having taken him in to custody, are faced with a series of strange events including the appearance of 40 more naked people and the disappearance of the local Tesco. By the end, we are asked to wonder whether Scotland would not be a better place if we all regressed back to the stone age or, at the very least, Danny Boyles Olympic vision of it.

Outlying Islands

Outlying Islands
1939, Scotland. Two young ornithologists arrive on a remote island. They've been tasked by the Ministry to conduct a study of the bird population. With only the island's authoritarian leaseholder and his niece for company, they find themselves drawn to the wildness of the island, igniting growing tensions and repressed passions. Blurring the line between fantasy and reality, Greig's poetic, funny, and politically charged play explores a society on the edge of immense change.

Suppliant Women, The

Suppliant Women, The
Fifty women board a boat in North Africa. They flee across the Mediterranean, leaving everything behind. They are escaping forced marriage in their home and seeking asylum in Greece. Written 2,500 years ago, The Suppliant Women is one of the world's oldest plays. It's about the plight of refugees, about moral and human rights, civil war, democracy and ultimately the triumph of love. It tells a story that echoes down the ages to find striking and poignant resonance today. Featuring in performance a chorus of local women, this is part play, part ritual, part theatrical archaeology. It explores fundamental questions of humanity: who are we, where do we belong and, if all goes wrong, who will take us in?

Victoria

Synopsis:
a trilogy in one play, Victoria is set in 1936, 1976 and 1996, and tells the story of three generations of rich and poor in the Scottish Highlands. Grasping the huge theme of the spilt in the country's culture between puritan repression and libertarian openness, it revolves around three different Victorias, all played by Neve McIntosh. In 1936, the story begins with deference and revolution. Victoria is a servant who emigrates when she's made pregnant by Oscar, a feckless student. For motives of his own, he joins his communist friend euan to fight the fascists in Spain. But, before they go, they settle scores with David, owner of the Red House and a cranky admirer of adolf Hitler. By 1976, the whole landscape has changed. enter Vicky, an American geologist looking for oil. She marries Oscar's son, while Oscar leads a council bid to buy the Red House and turn it into a school. Meanwhile, its owner, a dippy-hippy aristo, gets into Indian mysticism. In 1996, the hunt for oil has been taken over by the quarrying of rock and Victoria is the spoilt daughter of Vicky, who now lives at the Red House. Hippy counterculture has been replaced by environmental protest, and big business learns to cover exploitation with public relations. Victoria discovers Oscar's past and tries to find her own identity.

Welcome To the Hotel Caledonia

Synopsis:
It's election night in the Hotel Caledonia, not that anybody cares. there are two weddings on and one's descending into a fistfight. the bar's littered with exhausted politicians who can't bring themselves to watch the count, the groom's trying to decide which bridesmaid to chat up on the principle of the single transferable vote, and Mr and Mrs Scotland's attempt at a dirty weekend is descending into divorce. at the centre of it all, Svetlana - the Lithuanian receptionist - is trying to decide whether she should stay or go. Can Gavin - the assistant manager with a crush on her the size of a small Baltic Republic - persuade her that Scotlands got a future? Welcome to the Hotel Caledonia will be written in the two days prior to May 5th to capture the immediacy and excitement of the election and the unfolding events of the week. It will be performed script in hand on the day of the election itself. Some of Scotland's most exciting writers will conjure up a cast of dreamers, ranters, visionaries and street preachers all trying to make sense of a country which just can't seem to make up its mind what it wants. expect comedy, satire and probably a fair degree of bitterness and rage.

When the Bulbul Stopped Singing

Synopsis:
the Palestinian story has become synonymous with occupation, landlessness and the struggle for nationhood. But what's it like for the individual, when the threat knocks on his own door? Whose home is it anyway? In the spring of 2002, the Israeli army - the fourth most powerful in the world - invaded the West Bank city of Ramallah and laid siege to its people for one long month. Ramallah, known as the 'Bride of Palestine' for its heritage, internationalism, economy, and vibrant mix of Christian and Muslim traditions, was devastated, and its people killed. Palestinian cultural organisations were singled out for destruction. When the Bulbul Stopped Singing is a tour de force for one actor which documents Raja Shehadeh's determination to withstand invasion and draws a meticulous, quiet picture of sheer ordinariness fighting back: tanks at the end of the street; soldiers camping out in his brother's apartment; crops rotting in the fields; no bread. and still Raja paces his house and wryly attests to the Palestinian secret weapon: 'surmoud', or perseverance.

Yellow Moon (the Ballad Of Leila And Lee)

Yellow Moon (the Ballad Of Leila And Lee)
Taking the Ballad of Stagger Lee, one of the most notoriously macabre blues songs in musical history, as the starting point for a new play for young people isn't an obvious option for a writer. then again, such leaps of faith have been a constant of David Greig's now substantial back catalogue. This thoroughly contemporised teenage Bonnie-and-Clyde-style yarn is set among the disaffected youth of Linlithgow, and takes in everything from celebrity culture, self-harm, murder, stag hunting and the romantic potency of 1980s Swedish pop group a-Ha's big hit, Take On Me. Out of this emerges a lyrical little tragedy that concerns the ease with which young lives can be wasted when accidents happen and things spiral out of control. an asbo case in waiting, "Stag" Lee Macalinden has ambitions to be Linlithgow's first pimp. When he meets Silent Leila, the pair become stars of CCIV for all the wrong reasons, finding a story to call their own before heading north in search of Lee's errant father.
