Christopher Hampton was born in the Azores in 1946. He wrote his first play, When Did You Last See My Mother? at the age of eighteen. Since then, his plays have included the Philanthropist, Savages, Tales from Hollywood, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, White Chameleon and the Talking Cure. He has translated plays by Ibsen, Moliere, von Horvath, Chekhov and Yasmina Reza (including Art and Life x 3). His television work includes adaptations of the History Man and Hotel du Lac. His screenplays include the Honorary Consul, the Good Father, Dangerous Liaisons, Mary Reilly, Total eclipse, the Quiet American, Carrington, the Secret Agent and Imagining Argentina, the last three of which he also directed.

4th March, 1865: On the night of his second inauguration, a few weeks before his assassination, Abraham Lincoln meets the veteran black abolitionist Frederick Douglass in the White House to discuss the prospect of extending the vote to black men who have served in the soon to be victorious Union armies. 4th March, 1965: In the White House, Lyndon Johnson, anxious to introduce a new Voting Rights Act, is briefed by his sinister and 'unfirable' FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, on the imminent Selma to Montgomery march, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is a demonstration prompted by a state trooper's murder of the young activist Jimmie Lee Jackson, in Marion, Alabama, following a rally in support of voter registration in Perry County. In his ambitious new play, commissioned by the Guthrie theater, Minneapolis as the centrepiece of a retrospective of his plays and films, Christopher Hampton traces a line which runs from the last days of a brutal Civil War to the high-water mark of the Civil Rights movement and on, all the way to the present day; and considers the agonisingly slow healing of a wound, universal, but especially deep and painful in America: racism.

How much would you pay for a white painting? Would it matter who the painter was? Would it be art? One of Marc's best friends, Serge, has just bought a very expensive painting. Its about five feet by four, all white with white diagonal lines. To Marc, the painting is a joke, but Serge insists Marc doesn't have the proper standard to judge the work. another friend, Ivan, though burdened by his own problems, allows himself to be pulled into the this disagreement. eager to please, Ivan tells Serge he likes the painting. Lines are drawn and these old friends square off over the canvas, using it as an excuse to batter one another relentlessly over various failures. as their arguments become less theoretical and more personal, they border on destroying their friendships. at the breaking point, Serge hands Marc a felt tip pen and dares him: "Go on." This is where the friendship is finally tested and the aftermath of action, and its reaction, affirms the power of those bonds.

Disruption lies at the heart of the play itself. Two ostensibly civilised couples meet to sort out a playground punch-up: the son ofalain and annette has broken two incisors of the son of their hosts, Michel and Veronique. at first, diplomatic niceties are observed. Gradually, however, tensions emerge between and among the couples. alain, a cynical lawyer distractedly defending a dodgy pharmaceutical company on his mobile, irks his hosts and causes his wife to throw up. Meanwhile, Veronique, a moral Crusader who has just done a book about Darfur, allows her mask to slip and exposes the hollowness of her marriage to Michel, who is a vulgar nihilist at heart. as she proved in Life x 3, Reza is an expert analyst of social hypocrisy; and her play, in Christopher Hampton's witty translation, starts out as a rancidly funny account of two couples tiptoeing around their mutual dislike. Ralph Fiennes's detached lawyer raises the roof as, tucking into his host's sweetmeat, he announces: "at least all this has given us a new recipe." and Janet Mcleer's Veronique reveals where her true values lie when she laments that Tamsin Greig's annette has spewed up all over her priceless Kokoschka catalogue. even Ken Stott, as the would-be pacifier Michel, turns out to a bruiser who has cruelly released his daughter's hamster into the Parisian streets.

Synopsis:
Henry and Sonia are having a difficult evening with arnaud, their wakeful six-year-old son; but Henry has other worries. about to publish the results of two years' research on the flatness of galaxy halos, he's desperate to make a good impression on the distinguished astrophysicist Hubert Finidori, who wields a decisive influence over the question of Henry's longed-for promotion. So when Hubert arrives with his rebellious wife, Inez, in tow for dinner on the wrong night, the fact that there is no food in the apartment (merely an ample supply of Sancerre) is only one of the potentially disastrous elements in play. add to this Hubert's often brutal treatment of Inez; his lust for Sonia; Inez's weak head for alcohol; Henry's discovery that rival scientists may have beaten him to the punch; Sonia's equivocal feeling of attraction towards Hubert; and the entirely unpredictable behavior of the invisible arnaud-and the stage is set for a catastrophic unraveling of normal civilized behavior. But will it be this kind of catastrophe? Or that? Or, perhaps, worse still, will catastrophe be averted altogether?

On his 30th birthday Josef K. is arrested by an unknown authority for an unspecified crime. All his efforts to understand the charge are foiled. Those around him are deeply concerned that he is not taking the case seriously. On the eve of his 31st birthday two men arrive for K. He goes with them and guides them through the town to a quarry. They place his head on a block and stab him through the heart.

The Trial is Philip Glass's second 'pocket' opera based on the writings of Franz Kafka, and his first work created specifically for Music Theatre Wales, in celebration of the company's 25th birthday. Glass has a long relationship with the company, describing them as 'wonderful to work with. . . they seem to like these "odd" pieces of mine, and they do them very well. I think of my pocket operas as neutron bombs  small, but packing a terrific punch'.

Michel is six months into an affair with Alice, the wife of his best friend Paul, who's been the lover of Michel's wife, Laurence, for the past 18 months, neatly pulling the wool over Michel's eyes, who, let's face it, isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier, besides being a serial liar. How all this works out is at the heart of The Truth, an impudent, enjoyable farce about lying and the unexpected consequences thereof by France's newest favourite playwright, 35-year-old Florian Zeller. The essential prerequisite for the good liar is the unimpeachable innocence s/he presents to the world. Michel tries hard, but he's not very good at it. Compared to the rest, he's a naif, a babe in the woods, so that disaster almost happens, but hey, this is a farce, so a Happy Ending is a must.
