Birdgirl

Synopsis:
Bessie Coleman, 30, has a dream of flying airplanes and teaching other Blacks to fly. But in the first quarter of the twentieth century, opportunities for a Black woman are slight. In pursuit of that dream she saves tips from her job at Bo's Chili Parlor on Chicago's South Side, and - to the consternation of her Black friends - enlists the help of Willie Wills, a White mechanic. Despite the racism and mysogyny of flying schools in the U.S., Bessie eventually earns enough money to go to Paris where she becomes the first Black woman in the world to earn her pilot's license. there, too, she renews her friendship with Josephine Baker, a hot new personality, and begins an affair that ignites her heart and political ideas. When Josephine chooses to stay in the lights and money of gay Paris, Bessie returns to Chicago and barnstorms to raise money for an all-Negro flight school. On the eve of her establishment of the school, she falls to her death from a plane piloted by Wills. Set in the glamour and chaos of 1920's Chicago, Harlem, and Paris, Bessie Coleman's story is representative of many Negroes of the time who wanted something better and were willing to pay any price to achieve it.

Dead Zoo, The

Synopsis:
Welcome to the nightmare world of FrEddie McCoy: Melbourne Museum Founder, defender of the faith, and lousy fuck. Charles Darwin is his nemesis, and FrEddie's going to disprove his idiotic notions with an exhibition of his own: Australia's first gorilla family! If FrEddie believes this will convince the Australian public that they have nothing in common with apes, he's wrong. Darwin, McCoy and his wife Lizzie fight it out in this animal kingdom where economics vie with philosophy to win the media spotlight in 19th century Melbourne. In this absurdist romp through Australia's not-so-distant past, the evolution vs creation theory debate is reignited to remind us that some things never die: religious zealotry, Australian culture cringe, and animal magnetism.

Dorothea loves her job, lives for tourists, but when she witnesses a man jump - or fall - to his death, Dorothea's ready to move to the World Trade Center. In this poignantly funny view from a broad from above, New York is a Sam Spade movie, the long-distance viewers still cost a quarter, but the empire State Building is getting smaller all the time. Scenes From the Penitentiary

Synopsis:
Father Jack esposito, a Roman Catholic priest, is having a spiritual crisis. When the answer to his prayers is a "90's" Virgin Mary wearing a red sequined evening gown, it's just about all he can take. the problem is, he's undeniably drawn to her, and she is clearly his Savior. Mary G. would like for Jack to believe she is the second coming, but his doubts may win out. Meanwhile, Runaway Mary makes her way to New York City where she is assisted as a new street person by Just Richard, a kindly southern gentleman who knows his way around the streets of Brooklyn. Father Jack's parents, Mare and Joe esposito, are having their own crises. Bensonhurst is not the same to Mare and Joe after Bishop O'Brien comes bearing bad news, and Runaway Mary comes bearing good. Three Mary's; three views into modern life; three kinds of penitents and penitentiaries, and of course, heaven lies somewhere between Bensonhurst and Vegas.
