RICHARD HARRIS

  (1934 - )

Nationality:    British
email:    n/a     Website:    n/a

Literary Agent:    The Agency (London) Ltd  represented by Nick Quin

Richard Harris was born in London in 1934. He is a prolific writer, and was most active from the early 1960s to the mid-1990s He began writing for television, contributing episodes to twenty series like the avengers, the Saint, and the Sweeny. His career has been largely spent writing for the crime and detective genre, but in 1994 he won the prize for best situation comedy from the Writer's Guild of great Britain for a programme he had originated as a stage play. Indeed, though the majority of his work has been for television, a substantial amount of his output has been for the stage. Beginning in about 1971. Harris turned his earlier comedic ambitions towards the stage. the vast majority of his comedic work, even if it later ended up film, derives from his career as a playwright. Throughout the 1970s, a new play of his would be produced almost annually. Though the frequency of his stage work slowed in later decades, his plays continued to debut into the early part of the 21st century. One of his most successful plays, Stepping Out, has appeared in three different versions, ultimately allowing him the opportunity of musical film adaptation. a substantial part of Harris's body of work is adaptation. Often, as in examples cited above, this has taken the form of adapting his own work from one medium into another. However, he has also taken a number of literary characters and adapted them into on-going series. the most long-running of these adaptations are a Touch of Frost and the Last Detective, but he has also converted works including Mark Twain's the Prince and the Pauper into limited-run serials.. He has also adapted a small number of non-English plays into English. the Last Laugh derives from a Japanese work, and his adaptation of a Norwegian play into the dual-language film, Orions Belte, won the inaugural amanda award for Best Norwegian Film in 1985.

Albert

Synopsis:
a Finnish au pair and her travails with the english suitor of the previous au pair and an Italian visitor. If it were not for the thoughtfulness of the author who has kindly translated the dialogue of two of the characters into english, the audience would be as confused as the actors, who play a Finn, an Italian and an englishman - none of whom speak a word of the other's languages.

Will it be the talented and elegant Miss Doon or the loyal and long-serving Miss Gregory? Perhaps senior saleswoman Irene or showroom manager Dorian will get the job. events take a Dramatic turn over a lunch of rabbit curry when Miss Doon collapses and dies, poisoned by the oxalic acid crystals that another employee, Rachel, has been using to clean her hat. Inspector Charlesworth and Sergeant Wyler have a murder enquiry on their hands. Behind the glamour and gossip of a 1930s fashion house, secrets and lies are rife and more than one person may have harboured resentment towards Miss Doon. Ghosts

Synopsis:
It should be a happy day in Mrs alving's household, on the day of her son's return from Paris and the eve of the opening of an orphanage dedicated to the memory of her late husband, Captain alving. However, as final preparations are being made with Pastor Manders, old family secrets unravel the perceived identities of the key players. Large As Life

Synopsis:
First seen at the Thorndike theatre, Leatherhead, under the title Baby Love, this joyous and exhilarating musical encounters five very different couples and a single woman embarking on an exciting journey - the women are pregnant. To some this is a welcome surprise, to some a carefully planned event, to others a cause for worry and confusion. Jan and Patrick intend everything to be natural. eighteen-year-old Lorraine struggles to make the best of it, despite her young husband's inability to cope. Thankfully those, like Stuart and Vicki, who have been there before, are calmly and generously helping others. For Don and Helen, the middle-aged couple, the journey is more treacherous. Liz, the hardbitten feminist, is determined to raise a child without any masculine influence but shows her softer side when confronted with the plight of others. the darkest clouds gather where one would least expect as Chris and Caro's perfect marriage cracks under the strain. When the big delivery night arrives, with joy and with sadness, this musical shines with an understanding of natural development, never forsaking hope!

One Night A Week

One Night A Week
a revised version of the hit musical Stepping Out, this good-natured comedy from Richard Harris chronicles several months in the life of a beginning dance class. each of the eight students, who come from a variety of backgrounds, has his or her own reason for joining. For instance, Maxine, a confident, fast-talking saleswoman (and former Ovaltine dancer), is there on doctor's orders, while self-sacrificing andy participates because it is the only thing she does for herself. Whatever the cause, they make a point of coming every week to chat, relax and, if they can manage to, learn a couple of dance steps. Led by Mavis, their eternally patient instructor, and accompanied by the acerbic pianist Mrs. Fraser, the students (who range from hopeless to competent) strive to master the basics of dance. But the steps and routines are just the background for the real focus of the play - the relationships and interactions of these ten very different people. By their final performance, not only have the class members developed some degree of skill, but they have also overcome the inhibitions, awkwardness and personality conflicts that have kept them out of sync.

Party Piece

Party Piece
Suggested by the author's earlier play, Local affairs. This is a fast-paced and very funny play set in the back gardens of feuding neighbours. It is the night of Michael's and Roma's fancy dress house-warming party. the evening looks set to be a lively one until a string of hilarious disasters strike, including a distinct lack of guests, a burning garden shed, a marauding Zimmer frame and the prospect of an irate husband on the prowl.

Saving It For Albie

Saving It For Albie
Grace Andrews first met brothers Albie and Ray Rodway in her early 20s while holidaying alone in Corfu. More than two decades on, Grace and Albie unexpectedly run into each other again at a hotel in London. Remembering old feelings from the holiday, they become a couple and within six months get married. the play opens on the afternoon of their wedding when Albie has over-indulged on champagne and Ray, his best man, is helping him up the stairs to his Manchester flat. Grace's tactless and interfering mother, Rose, observes proceedings with an ever-critical eye. Between Albie's drunkenness and Rose's barbed commentary, not to mention the frequent phone calls from mysterious women, Grace finds an ally in reliable, good-natured family man Ray. When he produces an old photograph from the Corfu holiday, however, it soon transpires that the man Grace first fell in love with is not the man she thought he was.

Stepping Out

Stepping Out
a warm and very funny play about the lives of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap-dance class in a dingy North London church hall. as the play progresses, the class's dancing improves to such an extent that by the climax, a grand charity show performance, they have been transformed into triumphant tappers, worthy of any chorus line.

Stepping Out - the Musical

Stepping Out - the Musical
Following the success of the play "Stepping Out", Richard Harris has combined the talents of lyricist Mary Stewart-David and composer Denis King to create a heart-warming toe-tapping new musical following the familiar story of the loves and laughs of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap class in a dingy church hall. as the play unfolds, the songs delicately highlight the troubles and personalities of each if the characters: Mavis the ex-professional dancer, who runs the class; bubbly Sylvia; nervous andy; snobby but well-meaning Vera; confident attractive Maxine; fat, plain Lynne, who is very serious about dancing; anxious Dorothy; larger than life Trinidadian Rose, and Geoffrey, the lone widowed male. accompanied on the piano by the lugubrious Mrs Fraser, the tappers improve, so much so that the show climaxes with a big glitzy final tap routine number.
