Born and bred in New York City, John Hartnett has spent much of the last decades living in Europe. The Shubert Theatre Foundation awarded him a scholarship in 1968 to pursue graduate study in Drama toward an M.A. at C.W. Post College, Long Island University in Brookville based upon his early efforts and achievements in New York City as a playwright. In 1968, while still an undergraduate, he kick started his professional career by working nights and weekends Off-Off Broadway and was eventually nicknamed "the last Cino-ite" due to his remarkable position as the final figure to become ensconced among the notable entourage of Joe Cino's famous Greenwich Village theatre venue on Cordelia Street, the Caffe Cino. His writing career includes an output of plays, film scripts, treatments, translations, poetry collections, short stories, catalogues, and film reviews, as well commissions for industrial copy, philosophical and medical essays, and film projects. as translator of the Dutch language, he has been responsible for English language versions of such scripts as The Cloak of Charity by adriaan Ditvoorst, Schreber by Mia Meijer and Gerard Jan Reijnders, The Geisha by adriaan Ditvoorst, various poetry and prose pieces, as well as news reports, press releases and industrial texts.
