Christoph Hein is born 1944 in Heinzendorf/Silesia. Grows up in Bad Duben near Leipzig and moves to West-Berlin in 1958, where he attends a humanistic high school, until he returns to the GDR after the erection of the Wall in 1961. During the following years, he works as assembly worker, book salesman, and assistant director with Benno Besson at the Volksbuhne Berlin, achieves his late Abitur in 1964 to studiy philosophy and Logic in Leipzig and Berlin. After that, he first works as Dramaturg, then after 1973 as playwright at the Volksbuhne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Since 1979, Christoph Hein is a freelance author of plays, translations, adaptations, novels and narrations. In 1992, Christoph Hein becomes a member of the German Academy for Languages and Poetry in Darmstadt. From 1997 to 2000, he is president of the German PEN Centre. Christoph Hein received many awards, among them the Deutsches Verdienstkreuz.
