Gwyneth Herbert is an artist who continues to redefine (and defy) our expectations. A singer-songwriter with one foot in the jazz world and one somewhere in the future, with pierrot-dotted eyes, polka-spotted shoes and swanny whistle in hand she may appear as whimsical as a Bonzo Dog, but writes beautiful melodies and has a poet's grasp of the world around her. In 2010, Herbert won the Stiles and Drewe Song of the Year Award with her composition 'Lovely London Town' and a Sounds of england commission, had them queuing around the block at the Rochester Jazz Festival in New York (where her show was in the top ten out of over two hundred), had her cover of Neil Young's Only Love Can Break Your Heart' used in a Hollywood rom com', appeared at Wilton's Music Hall alongside Sian Phillips and Marc Almond, wrote a song cycle about the sea as Artist-in-Residence for prestigious venue Snape Maltings, sang a series of 18th Century murder ballads on Radio 4, and composed and performed a specially-commissioned soundtrack to silent film 'the Patsy' at the BFI. Herbert's adaptation of Rattigan's AFTeR LYDIA - lyrics and music by Herbert, book by Christine Denniston - had a staged reading at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury, directed by Maria Freidman. She is currently working on two original musicals: one under the working title of the A-Z OF MRS P with playwright Diane Samuels, which was workshopped at the National in May of this year, and another called eLSIe De WOLFe ISN't DeAD with bookwriter / lyricist Warner Brown. Herbert has released five albums to date, the latest of which, 'All the Ghosts' (Naim edge), is populated by a living, breathing cast of beaten-down dreamers, jaded city-dwellers, and women in a quandary and has the critics in a fizz, scrambling for comparisons with Lennon and McCartney, Nina Simone, the Kinks and Tom Waits.
