She had early repertory work as an actor in Sheffield, Windsor and Birmingham. THIEVES CARNIVAL at the Arts Theatre; BECKET for the RSC which won many awards including an Evening Standard and a Tony and went on to be made into a film starring Richard Burton and Peter O'toole; and POOR BITOS in the West End. Apart from translating Anouilh's plays, she co-wrote (with Frederic Raphael) the libretto for a Leslie Bricusse musical, LADY AT THE WHEEL in 1958; an adaptation of Francoise Sagan's CASTLE IN SWEDEN in 1962 and, for the RSC at the Aldwych in 1964, a version of Roger Vitrac's surrealist 1928 drawing-room satire, VICTOR. Becket, Or the Honour Of God
Synopsis:
as he waits to be scourged for his part in Becket's murder, King Henry 11 retraces his entire relationship with the saint, once his dearest friend and mentor. His catastrophic mistake was to create Becket archbishop out of political expediency for Becket found a fulfilment lacking in his hitherto luxurious life and therefore guarded the honour of God as once he had, as Henry's Chancellor, once guarded the honour of his King. Victor
Synopsis:
surrealist 1928 drawing-room satire, in which a figure of Death, Ida Mortemart (played by an imperious Elizabeth Spriggs), broke wind throughout.
Notes:
Original Playwright - Roger Vitrac. This last show the flatulence was done by an offstage tuba player blowing the first bars of Beethoven's Fifth opened in the middle of the "dirty plays" uproar initiated by an irate RSC governor, the impresario emile Littler, and came in the wake of a "theatre of Cruelty" season, flanked by David Rudkin's Afore Night Come and Brook's production of the Marat/Sade. the RSC founder Peter Hall won the day and the RSC was recognised as a serious, radical european theatre company. - Michael Coveney
