Portrait of a Lady, The

Synopsis:
Isabel Archer, an attractive, intelligent young woman, travels with her aunt to Surrey in the 1870s to visit relations before going on to Italy. At the suggestion of Ralph Touchett, her cousin who is in love with her but too sick to feel he should press his suit, her uncle leaves Isabel a wealthy woman. Her independent spirit leads her to defy the best advice given to her by the people who really care about her and accept a proposal of marriage from Gilbert Osmond, a seemingly charming, but deeply flawed, malignant dilettante. Spotlights magazine wrote of the original production: " . . . a finely tuned piece of theatre with sharp characterisation . . . strong narrative drive . . ." whilst another local reviewer said: ". . . a stylish and literary adaptation and theatrically exciting production . . . continuously keeps the attention of the audience."

Notes:
A two act play adapted from the novel by Henry James. Playing time: 1 hr. 30 mins. Minimalist treatment suggested. Written to enable a minimum of eight actors to play all the roles. Intended that the play should flow seamlessly. Changes of place and time indicated by use of music and/or changes of lighting, as/if required. An all-purpose set with two or three period chairs and a small round table that can be moved by the actors.
